{"id":161251,"date":"2026-08-09T03:03:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T03:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/161251\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T03:03:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T03:03:25","slug":"british-columbia-declares-state-of-emergency-as-more-than-20000-people-flee-wildfires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/161251\/","title":{"rendered":"British Columbia declares state of emergency as more than 20,000 people flee wildfires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Thousands of people in western Canada have been ordered to flee a fast-moving wildfire that nearly doubled in size overnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A state of emergency was declared in British Columbia (BC) on Saturday, local time, after the Bald Range wildfire was burning out of control and grew rapidly to about 9,510 hectares.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-02\/europe-fires-fingerprints-of-climate-change\/106967040\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Climate scientist caught up in Europe&#8217;s &#8216;dystopian&#8217; summer<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Stefan Rahmstorf was holidaying in southern France when he came face to face with the climate future he has tried to fight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Evacuation orders were in place for Summerland, Peachland and other districts west of Okanagan Lake in the province&#8217;s southern interior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The region produces most of BC&#8217;s wine and is Canada&#8217;s second-largest wine-producing area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Premier David Eby told a news conference on Saturday that one fire official had likened the fire to &#8220;a bomb going off&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He described flames on 100-foot tree, flames going 200 feet above that, and the fire creating its own weather system, which creates lightning, which then feeds on itself,&#8221; Mr Eby said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Homes have been lost, and properties have been destroyed. Some people became trapped as conditions changed very quickly, and needed to be rescued,&#8221; the premier said, adding it remained a very dynamic and threatening situation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Summerland has a population of about 12,000 people, according to the 2021 census, and Peachland is home to about 6,500 residents.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A line of traffic builds up, as police block a main road. (Reuters: Paige Taylor White)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A state of emergency grants the provincial government immediate access to special powers including travel restrictions and supply protections to prevent price gouging, and specific tools to coordinate rescue work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Officials said the Bald Range wildfire triggered the largest evacuation event so far this summer and more than 20,000 people across BC have been forced to evacuate their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A lot of farms have been affected. We don&#8217;t know how many structures have been lost.
