{"id":161343,"date":"2026-08-09T06:48:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T06:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/161343\/"},"modified":"2026-08-09T06:48:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T06:48:16","slug":"golf-club-battles-hungry-badgers-digging-up-greens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/161343\/","title":{"rendered":"Golf club battles hungry badgers digging up greens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A golf course owner has been forced to take drastic action to protect its greens from damage by badgers searching for food during the drought.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Susan Moore, owner of Clare Park Lake Golf Course in Clare, Suffolk, said the animals had left parts of the course &#8220;churned up and like a ploughed field&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She has started rolling netting over the course once play has finished and has also taken to playing a radio overnight and using flashing lights to deter the stripey saboteurs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;You&#8217;ve got to come out with your head torch, roll out your nets, then get up in the morning and roll them back up again,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Holes and scattered earth can be seen on the closely-cut grass of a golf club green.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/bbc_us_articles_995\/db1cd512c95ba0ecb4821b98d5aba843.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Moore said the badgers had left parts of the course looking like &#8220;a ploughed field&#8221; [Clare Park Lake Golf Course]<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Moore said the damage first appeared on Wednesday night, when a badger had appeared to rip up the grass and had tried to dig a hole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Repairing the greens means replacing material and reseeding the grass, which can then need watering two or three times a day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More from Suffolk:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She believes badgers are being drawn to the watered greens because the softer soil makes finding food such as worms easier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Whilst we like to distract them, or deter them, from messing things up a bit for us, we have to respect the fact that they live here too,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A woman with a silver bob haircut is standing outside wearing a grey T-shirt.
