Batting leadoff for the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday was none other than Brett Bateman, former Mounds View and Minnesota Gophers standout.<\/p>\n
The fleet, 5-foot-10 center fielder made his major league debut over the weekend in Philadelphia. In just his third game, he was Inserted at leadoff. He went 2-for-6 with an RBI single, striking out twice, in a 12-inning, 7-6 loss to the Phillies.<\/p>\n
In the three-game series, Bateman went 3-for-14 with an RBI, two runs and two walks. He rapped a double off the wall in his first at-bat, on the first pitch thrown to him, in the bigs.<\/p>\n
Bateman, 24, originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2023, was acquired by the Blue Jays in a trade last week. This season, with the Iowa Cubs, Chicago\u2019s Triple A team,\u00a0he was hitting .313 with 20 stolen bases, three homers, 33 RBI\u2019s and 61 runs.<\/p>\n
The Blue Jays had him ticketed for their Triple A team, Buffalo, but called him up to fill a spot after infielder Luis Ur\u00edas was injured and another center fielder, Daulton Varsho, was traded to Houston.<\/p>\n
In his senior year with the Gophers, 2023, Bateman hit .354 with 29 runs and 17 steals in 50 games, with his excellent range in center field also attracting pro scouts\u2019 attention.<\/p>\n
