The Ontario government says it will take on a restoration project at the Heart Lake Conservation Park in Brampton.<\/p>\n

At a news conference Monday, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks Todd McCarthy said the province is partnering with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) to address erosion, remove invasive species, plant native vegetation and upgrade stormwater infrastructure in the wetlands complex.<\/p>\n

The province will spend nearly $1.2 million to restore approximately 10 hectares of wetland, he said.<\/p>\n

“Wetlands are vital natural infrastructure,” he told reporters. “We do not have to choose between a strong economy and a healthy environment because with smart, practical action, we can continue to deliver both.”<\/p>\n

The TRCA’s chief executive officer John MacKenzie said the project seeks to replace a deteriorating part of the road, restore more than one hectare of wetland shoreline habitat, rehabilitate more than 800 metres of shoreline and install approximately 740 metres of wildlife exclusion fencing.<\/p>\n

“Most people traveling along Heart Lake Road and Highway 410 don’t give much thought to what lies just beyond the pavement,” he said. “Metres away is a thriving wetland ecosystem that supports turtles, birds, amphibians, fish and countless other species, many of them becoming more rare.”<\/p>\n

The project is part of a larger $9.6 million provincial commitment over the next two years.<\/p>\n

‘Wetlands protect our homes’: environment minister<\/p>\n

Areas such as the Heart Lake Conservation Park act as sponges, absorbing heavy rainfall and reducing the severity of floods, McCarthy said.<\/p>\n

“Wetlands protect our homes and our businesses against flooding, drought and extreme weather,” he said. “Wetlands filter sediment and nutrients from runoff before it reaches our larger waterways, improving water quality and protecting aquatic life.”<\/p>\n

“Wetlands create clean, healthy habitat for a remarkable range of plants and wildlife,” McCarthy added. “Healthy wetlands also support opportunities to enjoy our great outdoors \u2014 opportunities like fishing, canoeing and bird watching, all of which contribute to our local economies.”<\/p>\n

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, who joined McCarthy at the news conference, said the project is about more than just protecting the environment.<\/p>\n
