Statistics Canada is reporting that in July 2026, Canadian-resident return trips from the United States totalled\u00a02.3\u00a0million, up\u00a010.2% from the same month in\u00a02025, marking the fourth consecutive month of year-over-year growth.<\/p>\n
The increase in July\u00a02026, Statistics Canada said\u00a0is largely due to a base-year effect, as Canadian-resident trips to the United States declined sharply in\u00a02025\u00a0following geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n
While return trips from the United States by automobile rose\u00a012.8% from July\u00a02025\u00a0to July\u00a02026, they were\u00a028.9% lower than in July\u00a02024.<\/p>\n
At the same time, return trips from the United States by air decreased\u00a01.4% from July\u00a02025\u00a0and were\u00a026.8% below their July\u00a02024\u00a0level.<\/p>\n
On July\u00a027,\u00a02026, the\u00a0Gordie Howe International Bridge opened, spanning the Detroit River between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan. It adds to Windsor\u2019s existing two border crossings, the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, which, together, are Canada\u2019s busiest land crossings.<\/p>\n
From July\u00a027\u00a0to\u00a031, the Gordie Howe International Bridge was used for 18,900 Canadian-resident return trips from the United States by automobile and 18,100 US-resident trips to Canada by automobile.<\/p>\n
During the same period, there were\u00a031,500\u00a0return trips by Canadian residents and\u00a021,200\u00a0arrivals to Canada by\u00a0US\u00a0residents via the other Windsor crossings.<\/p>\n
Canadian-resident return trips from overseas countries by air totalled\u00a0988,900\u00a0in July\u00a02026, a decrease of\u00a01.4% from the same month one year earlier.<\/p>\n
US-resident trips to Canada increased\u00a06.5% in July, reaching\u00a02.7\u00a0million. This marked the sixth consecutive month of year-over-year increase.<\/p>\n
In July,\u00a0US\u00a0residents made\u00a01.9\u00a0million trips to Canada by automobile (+7.2%) and\u00a0749,000\u00a0trips by air (+4.8%).<\/p>\n
Together, Canadian host cities Vancouver and Toronto were home to three\u00a0FIFA World Cup matches\u00a0in July\u00a02026. Teams from five overseas countries played in these matches. Total air arrivals from these five countries were up\u00a018.7% (+6,700) in July\u00a02026\u00a0compared with one year earlier.<\/p>\n
Notably, air arrivals by Colombian residents peaked on Monday, July\u00a06, the day before their World Cup match in Vancouver, while air arrivals by residents of Switzerland peaked on Sunday, July\u00a05, ahead of their match in Vancouver. Air arrivals by Portuguese and Croatian residents peaked on Wednesday, July\u00a01, before their World Cup match in Toronto on July\u00a02.<\/p>\n
