There’s something special whenever a K-pop act rolls in, especially an act as big as IVE taking on one of the biggest venues in the city.<\/p>\n

On Sunday night, passionate fans flocked to Rogers Arena for the\u00a0SHOW WHAT I AM World Tour to welcome the girl group\u2019s first-ever performance in the city. Vancouver seems to get the short end of the stick in terms of K-pop, with many having to cross the border into Washington State if an artist is lucky enough to announce a show\u2014most recently SEVENTEEN, ENHYPEN, and LE SSERAFIM in the past couple of years. But most of the time, the Pacific Northwest gets skipped over as well, with fans making the trip down to the major hubs like Toronto or Los Angeles, where they have their only chance to see the biggest acts like BTS, BLACKPINK, and Stray Kids.<\/p>\n

But recently, Vancouver seems to be on a bit of a hot streak with girl groups at Rogers Arena.\u00a0TWICE sold out two massive shows earlier in January and aespa is set to perform later in the fall. IVE, of course, performed this past weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Formed by Starship Entertainment in 2021, IVE consists of six members: An Yu-jin, Gaeul, Rei, Jang Won-young, Liz, and Leeseo. Their music style can be described as confident pop with highly polished electronic production and catchy hooks. In just a few years, they\u2019ve quickly established themselves as one of the leading K-pop girl groups.<\/p>\n

At 8 p.m., the lights dimmed in the Arena. After a quick VCR (pre-recorded video clip) introducing the members and hyping up the crowd, the words \u201cAre you ready?\u201d remained on the screens. With a shot of confetti, IVE and their dancers confidently took the stage, running through \u201cGOTCHA (Baddest Eros)\u201d and \u201cXOXZ\u201d. The group effortlessly displayed their swagger and attitude driven choreography on the darker, rebellious track \u201cBaddie,\u201d with IVE performing for the first time without their backup dancers.<\/p>\n

Moving to the solo stage, each member got to show off their own personality and musical style\u2014some deviating from the traditional IVE sound people have come to expect. It was interesting to see the contrast between some of the performances, like Jang Won-young\u2019s confident and bold \u201c8\u201d compared to Rei\u2019s cute and playful-sounding \u201cIn Your Heart\u201d. Each member made a statement, not just in their music but also in their outfits, bringing their own flair to the stage.<\/p>\n

With a break in the set, IVE got to address the DIVE (fan club name), jokingly telling everyone to sit down, as it was \u201cthe only time to rest\u201d. Rogers Arena erupted as the group exclaimed, \u201cIVE is finally here in Vancouver!\u201d Fans cheered for their favourite member, as each took the opportunity to introduce themselves and talk a little bit about their solo songs and the meaning behind them. Before the end of the break, the group teased fans, asking them what song they wanted to hear and assured everyone all their favourites were coming their way.<\/p>\n

The energy in the room felt like 100 as the sextet shed their angel-inspired look, tossing them aside to reveal the sparkling outfits they had been wearing underneath all along on the opening beat to \u201cATTITUDE\u201d. IVE was relentless with their energy, seamlessly performing hit after hit with \u201cLOVE DIVE\u201d, \u201cREBEL HEART\u201d, \u201cI AM\u201d, and \u201cBANG BANG\u201d. With no breaks, the girl group showed no signs of slowing down, giving the fans exactly what they wanted to see and hear.<\/p>\n

After all was said and done, the group left the stage for a much-deserved rest. A behind-the-scenes VCR gave a glimpse into the amount of work the group put into the choreography, stage design and setlist to show a more mature and confident side of IVE on their second-ever world tour, in hopes of making the best experience for the DIVE.<\/p>\n

The girl group came back out dressed in their matching IVE tour hoodies for not one but two encores. With nothing to prove, this was purely a victory lap, with members making sure to get to every side of the arena, pouring all their energy toward the fans, waving and forming hearts with their hands. IVE showed off their fun personalities, laughing, goofing off and making up fun dances with each other on the fly. Closing out the night with an all-out singalong, the group brought a fitting end with one of their biggest tracks, \u201cAfter LIKE.\u201d<\/p>\n

For their first stop in the city, IVE brought a high-energy, show-stopping performance filled with tight choreography, bold outfits, and plenty of fan interaction. Passionate fans filled the arena on Sunday to make a statement: the city deserves more K-pop shows, and if there’s one coming to town, the scene is ready to show up. With a nearly sold-out arena, the night served as a strong reminder to entertainment companies and promoters that there’s a thriving K-pop community in Vancouver.<\/p>\n
