{"id":16729,"date":"2026-04-23T18:13:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/16729\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T18:13:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:13:07","slug":"usw-canada-presses-parliament-for-stronger-steel-protections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/16729\/","title":{"rendered":"USW Canada presses Parliament for stronger steel protections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dozens of\u00a0United Steelworkers (USW) Canada labor union\u00a0members\u00a0lobbied\u00a0federal politicians in Ottawa, Ontario, on Thursday, April 23.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the union\u2019s two-day Stand Up for Steel\u00a0Conference,\u00a0dozens of members\u00a0ascended on\u00a0Parliament Hill.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2026\/04\/22\/3279290\/0\/en\/steelworkers-to-lobby-feds-for-urgent-action-on-existential-crisis-facing-steel-industry.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">statement<\/a>, USW members presented\u00a0politicians with specific recommendations for supporting Canada\u2019s steel producers,\u00a0workers, and communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The union said it seeks relief from the devastating job losses caused by US tariffs and trade policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe threats to our steel sector and the tens of thousands of jobs and communities it supports cannot be overstated,\u201d said USW National Director Marty Warren.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Warren added, \u201cThe federal government has taken\u00a0a number of\u00a0important steps to protect the Canadian steel industry. However, greater action is needed to confront the challenges created by unprecedented global trade upheaval.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To mitigate the impact of US tariffs on Canadian steel, the country retooled its programs and ramped up steel protections.<\/p>\n<p>By expanding eligibility to the Large Enterprise Tariff Loan\u00a0(LETL)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelmarketupdate.com\/2025\/11\/18\/algoma-finalizes-ca500m-loan-from-canadian-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">program<\/a> in 2025, Algoma Steel gained access to CA$400 million from the federal government and CA$100 million from Ontario (~US$370 million).<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Canada\u00a0tightened its steel tariff-rate quota. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steelmarketupdate.com\/2026\/03\/12\/canadian-steelmakers-call-for-tariff-free-trade-one-year-into-tariff-turmoil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">measure<\/a> deterred transshipments of cheap steel intended for\u00a0the US from flooding the Canadian market.<\/p>\n<p>Canada enacted a new surtax to thwart melted-and-poured Chinese steel from entering its market.
