With kennel space for dogs running tight, an Ontario municipal shelter is slashing what it charges adopters.<\/p>\n
From Aug. 8 to 22, Mississauga Animal Services will charge $25 for dog and cat adoptions, plus harmonized sales tax (HST) and any required pet license fees, to help reduce crowding.<\/p>\n
What’s happening?<\/p>\n
According to Global News<\/a>, the city is running its “Homeward Bound” event as Mississauga’s shelter says it is close to full<\/a> for dogs.<\/p>\n That temporary rate is far below the regular adoption prices: about $280 plus HST for dogs and puppies, and up to $190 for cats and kittens.<\/p>\n Greg Madeley, who leads animal care and well-being for Mississauga Animal Services, said adoption is handled as more than a quick choice. Applicants go through an interview, meet the animal alongside family members, and must demonstrate understanding of the financial and lifestyle responsibilities that come with pet ownership.<\/p>\n “It’s not just come and adopt a pretty kitten and puppy; it takes getting them to the proper home so they have a fighting chance,” Madeley said.<\/p>\n People can attend the event without booking ahead, but adopters must be at least 18 years old.<\/p>\n Why does it matter?<\/p>\n Madeley said shelters can look after animals for a time, but pets generally fare better in permanent, stable homes than they do in a shelter setting.<\/p>\n “What we would like to do is get some of our dogs out of the shelter because it’s not a great environment,” he said.<\/p>\n In Halifax, Bide Awhile communications and marketing coordinator Sam Cole said that, despite the volume of interest, shelters still focus on what he described as an “adoption that fits,” using factors such as an animal’s medical history, temperament, previous home life, and the adopter’s daily routine to guide placements.<\/p>\n What can be done?<\/p>\n Rescue groups say people thinking about adoption should slow down and research the decision carefully.<\/p>\n That means looking into breeds, being honest about your schedule, and considering what kind of animal best matches your home and lifestyle.<\/p>\n Cole said everyday routines are an important part of that decision. Someone who is frequently on the go may not be well suited to a dog that needs more time and exercise, while a more independent cat could be a better match.
