Nearly 2,000 were taken prisoner and many others were wounded. Behind every number was a son, a brother, a husband, a father and a friend whose sacrifice forever changed the lives of those left behind,” said Bouliane.

The raid was an amphibious attack on Nazi occupied France to test the strength of German coastal defences.

Retired Major Gary Scott of the Dieppe Military Veterans’ Association believes Dieppe is a bit of a forgotten battle in Canada, but said important lessons were learned for Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944, when the allies successfully landed on the beaches of Normandy.

“It was probably a training ground,” said Scott. “It was sort of a disaster. Dieppe was a disaster.
