{"id":1704,"date":"2026-04-12T20:46:30","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T20:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/1704\/"},"modified":"2026-04-12T20:46:30","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T20:46:30","slug":"calgary-fire-department-responds-to-increased-calls-regarding-airport-odours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/1704\/","title":{"rendered":"Calgary Fire Department responds to increased calls regarding airport odours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\">Following\u00a0an initial\u00a0spring thaw in March,\u00a0the Calgary Fire Department (CFD)\u00a0continues to see increased concerns from communities surrounding the airport\u00a0regarding\u00a0odours\u00a0related to stormwater runoff ponds at the Calgary International Airport.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\">The\u00a0pungent,\u00a0rotten egg-like smell is a known issue in the area, primarily produced by glycol used to de-ice planes, which\u00a0collects\u00a0in stormwater ponds. When these ponds thaw in the spring,\u00a0it releases\u00a0a\u00a0sulphur-like\u00a0odour, which can smell like natural gas or propane. The\u00a0odour\u00a0is not known to be hazardous.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\">\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0sometimes\u00a0seeing\u00a0over\u00a020\u00a0calls a day, over\u00a060\u00a0in the last month\u00a0related to airport\u00a0odour\u00a0concerns.\u00a0Earlier this week, on April\u00a06, one crew attended 15 calls in a single shift,\u201d says\u00a0Fire\u00a0Chief\u00a0Steve Dongworth. \u201cThis\u00a0can\u00a0drain\u00a0fire service resources in those areas, causing concern about our ability to provide consistent response times for other calls.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\">Residents living near the Calgary International Airport\u00a0are encouraged to consider the nearby source of outdoor\u00a0odours\u00a0before calling 911.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\">CFD continues to\u00a0advise residents to\u00a0call 911 if they are concerned about natural gas or propane leaks, particularly if they\u00a0are\u00a0indoors or\u00a0at\u00a0a commercial business.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\">It is expected that Calgary International Airport will complete infrastructure improvements by 2027 that will mitigate persistent seasonal\u00a0odours\u00a0that have been reported by residents\u00a0in recent years.
