{"id":170409,"date":"2026-08-16T22:34:43","date_gmt":"2026-08-16T22:34:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/170409\/"},"modified":"2026-08-16T22:34:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T22:34:43","slug":"new-england-win-the-type-of-game-to-kickstart-toronto-fc-fraser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/170409\/","title":{"rendered":"New England win &#8216;the type of game&#8217; to kickstart Toronto FC: Fraser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better now than never, TFC fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number 13 may be lucky for Toronto FC after all, as Toronto FC snapped their 12-game winless streak on Saturday night with <a href=\"https:\/\/wakingthered.com\/2026\/08\/16\/25451\/10-man-toronto-fc-earn-1st-win-since-april-hang-on-to-beat-new-england-revolution-in-return-home\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an emphatic 2-1 win<\/a> over the New England Revolution in their first home game at BMO Field since May. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a win that the Reds had been ever so slowly marching towards since their last win on April 4 over the Colorado Rapids, with a run of form that had perked up slightly since returning from the World Cup break, despite not winning until Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Related Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/wakingthered.com\/2026\/08\/01\/25278\/djordje-mihailovic-toronto-fc-longing-to-turn-the-corner-we-can-explode-with-wins\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Djordje Mihailovic, Toronto FC \u2018longing\u2019 to turn the corner: \u2018We can explode\u2019 with wins<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSometimes, games like (Saturday night\u2019s win over New England) are what you need to kickstart your season,\u201d head coach Robin Fraser told reporters, including Waking The Red, post-game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t play as well as we would like to have, and it\u2019s certainly things we will continue to work on, but I do think games like this can be a turning point for you and we\u2019d certainly like to think that that\u2019s the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Reds had been desperate for that turning point since April 4, coming close to grasping a result, only to be knocked back down into an emotionally and physically draining hole that they couldn\u2019t find a way to climb out of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toronto FC\u2019s 12-game winless run had its own \u2018highs\u2019, namely two smash-and-grab draws that saw <a href=\"https:\/\/wakingthered.com\/2026\/04\/23\/23245\/luka-gavran-scores-late-equalizer-as-toronto-fc-comeback-to-draw-philadelphia-union\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">goalkeeper Luka Gavran score a last-minute equalizer<\/a> against the Philadelphia Union. But it also had more than its fair share of lows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less than three weeks ago, they had clawed back to level terms against D.C. United, only for <a href=\"https:\/\/wakingthered.com\/2026\/07\/26\/25195\/toronto-fc-fall-2-1-to-d-c-united-concede-penalty-10-minutes-into-stoppage-time\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tai Baribo to score a winning penalty in the 10th minute of second-half stoppage time<\/a>. There was also the four-game losing streak, which included an embarrassing defeat to Atl\u00e9tico Ottawa \u2014 and a Ballou Tabla hat-trick \u2014 in the first round of the Canadian Championship.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"904\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/fraser-mcleod-904x509.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25494\"\/>Courtesy: Shaun McLeod\/Canadian Soccer Daily<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo many times in my playing career and coaching career you go through a rough patch and you have a game that you just grind and you fight and your commitment to each other and your determination is what makes a difference, and then from there you kick on to good things,\u201d Fraser added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Djordje Mihailovic was shown a straight red card in the 76th minute on Saturday \u2014 a loss that Fraser will need to resolve ahead of Charlotte FC\u2019s visit to BMO Field on Wednesday \u2014 that commitment needed to be on full show, with just one goal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Survive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And survive, they did, as New England peppered TFC goalkeeper Luka Gavran with seven shots in the final 13 minutes. Whereas two, maybe three goals would have been \u2018expected\u2019, they came out conceding, crucially, just one.<\/p>\n<p>Related Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/wakingthered.com\/2026\/04\/23\/23363\/luka-gavran-heroics-the-latest-twist-in-wild-toronto-fc-season-so-far-this-is-a-perfect-moment-to-knee-slide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luka Gavran heroics the latest twist in wild Toronto FC season so far: \u2018Perfect moment to knee slide\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"904\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/tfc-team-mcleod-904x509.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25492\"\/>Courtesy: Shaun McLeod\/Canadian Soccer Daily<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe coach told us \u2014 also last game in New York \u2014 these are the games where we can switch the momentum a little bit to our side,\u201d Toronto FC goalscorer Niklas Dorsch said after the win. \u201cI think a game like this today, 13 minutes one man less, you can stick even more together and you can build this team spirit, which you need every game to win games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robin Fraser agreed that while TFC \u201c(weren\u2019t) perfect tonight, or even close to it,\u201d they were at long last, able to stop their opposition and finally put all the pieces together \u2014 something that they are vying to repeat against a tougher Charlotte side on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve done some really good things with the ball over the last couple of weeks, we had a few moments today where we did some good things with the ball, but if we don\u2019t stop teams, we don\u2019t give ourselves the opportunity to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it\u2019s much later than one would otherwise want to be \u201ckickstarting\u201d your season, time is on the Reds\u2019 side, thanks to the World Cup and Leagues Cup pauses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly half of TFC\u2019s season \u2014 15 out of 34 games \u2014 has yet to be played, and if this moment can truly be a turning point, they need just to make up four points against D.C. United to earn their first playoff berth since the 2019 and COVID-impacted 2020 seasons. Additionally, if they dare look up the table, only a single additional point separates each of New England in third, down to ninth-place D.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, it first starts with focusing on their next game, says Dorsch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think (Saturday\u2019s win) is where maybe the momentum changes to our side.
