Some words may be mispronounced.\n        <\/p>\n<p>D\u00dcSSELDORF, Germany (AP) \u2014 The United States successfully defended the men&#8217;s title at the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/olympic-flag-football-nfl-9f935d425f9025cb9bb3b0e701b176d3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flag football<\/a> world championships on Sunday but lost the women&#8217;s title to Canada, while Mexico&#8217;s women and Canada&#8217;s men earned qualification spots for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. men beat Italy 46-26 to secure a sixth straight title and the women missed out on a fourth straight title after losing 27-20 to Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGold is the only standard,\u201d said men&#8217;s quarterback Nico Casares, who threw two touchdown passes. \u201cThat&#8217;s our motto. That&#8217;s what we play by, that&#8217;s what we live by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. women started strongly but it was tied 14-14 at the break after Caroline Moquin-Joubert caught quarterback Sara Parker&#8217;s pass at the end of the first half. Parker set up Frederique Morneau at the start of the second half as Canada took control.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. had a fourth down, yards from the line, with three seconds left, but could not make the final play count. It was Canada&#8217;s third title and first since beating the U.S. in the 2014 final.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel so happy, I can\u2019t believe it,\u201d Parker said after hugging her mother. \u201dLiterally the best day ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The International Federation of American Football ran the championship tournament, which doubled up as a qualifier, in the German city of D\u00fcsseldorf.<\/p>\n<p>The top two men\u2019s and top two women\u2019s teams earned a spot at the 2028 Games, along with the U.S. men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s teams because they already qualified as hosts.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday&#8217;s two other finalists \u2014 the Italian men and Canadian women \u2014 earned an Olympic spot by reaching the final against the U.S. teams, meaning that the bronze-medal games decided who joined them.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico women cried with joy after a 20-19 win over Great Britain \u2014 which rallied from 20-6 down \u2014 for the women\u2019s bronze and an Olympic spot.<\/p>\n<p>But Mexico&#8217;s men lost 34-26 in overtime to Canada, which claimed an Olympic spot.<\/p>\n<p>Rules of the game<\/p>\n<p>Flag football was among five sports <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/olympics-los-angeles-2028-cricket-flag-football-46ee51b40a0580007935668e41c21151\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">given Olympic status<\/a> for the 2028 Games back in 2023, with the game played five-on-five in two 20-minute halves, no tackling and an emphasis on speed and elusiveness.<\/p>\n<p>The NFL has said it plans to launch women\u2019s and men\u2019s professional flag football ahead of the Olympics. ___<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/nfl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">See AP\u2019s full NFL coverage here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bozemandailychronicle.com offers audio versions of articles using Instaread.
