{"id":170673,"date":"2026-08-17T08:29:07","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T08:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/170673\/"},"modified":"2026-08-17T08:29:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T08:29:07","slug":"centennial-college-centennial-journalism-students-tell-stories-that-connect-communities-with-support-from-toronto-foundation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/170673\/","title":{"rendered":"Centennial College &#8211; Centennial journalism students tell stories that connect communities with support from Toronto Foundation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new partnership with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/torontofoundation.ca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto Foundation<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0supporting\u00a0Centennial College journalism students to shine a light on\u00a0the people, organizations and ideas that\u00a0connect and\u00a0strengthen communities\u00a0at a time when\u00a0hyperlocal reporting is\u00a0needed\u00a0more\u00a0than ever.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this summer, students\u00a0in\u00a0Centennial&#8217;s Contemporary Journalism graduate certificate program (a joint program with the University\u00a0of\u00a0Toronto\u00a0Scarborough) began reporting stories from\u00a0neighbourhoods\u00a0across Toronto.\u00a0Their hyperlocal coverage is helping to\u00a0highlight the diversity, generosity and resourcefulness of regular people\u00a0who have created initiatives to\u00a0improve\u00a0quality of life\u00a0for others\u00a0in their communities.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Supported by a gift from Toronto Foundation to Centennial&#8217;s School of Media and Creative Arts, the college&#8217;s journalism students have the opportunity to be paid for this work,\u00a0through stories\u00a0published in local outlets\u00a0in\u00a0Toronto.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This fall,\u00a0Centennial\u00a0journalism students will\u00a0write\u00a0stories based on insights from Toronto Foundation&#8217;s 2026\u00a0Toronto&#8217;s Vital Signs\u00ae Report,\u00a0set to be\u00a0released in November. The report\u00a0will\u00a0feature\u00a0research that\u00a0examines trends affecting Torontonians&#8217; wellbeing and\u00a0factors that strengthen quality of life in the city.\u00a0Journalism professors will lead\u00a0Centennial students\u00a0through\u00a0data interpretation,\u00a0to\u00a0derive\u00a0insights\u00a0for\u00a0their\u00a0storytelling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So far, Centennial students have reported\u00a0on\u00a0initiatives including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/torontoobserver.ca\/2026\/07\/13\/thorncliffe-park-urban-farmers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">neighbours in Thorncliffe Park coming together to plant urban gardens<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/torontoobserver.ca\/2026\/07\/13\/turtle-protectors-mishiikenh-gizhaasowin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an Indigenous-led project to protect turtles living in Toronto&#8217;s parks.<\/a>\u00a0The\u00a0organizations\u00a0highlighted in these stories\u00a0are recipients of Toronto Foundation&#8217;s Vital Signs Grants, and were included\u00a0in its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/torontofoundation.ca\/goodtogive2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2026 Good to Give Guide<\/a>, a resource that encourages Torontonians to support smaller community groups making an outsized impact on\u00a0their\u00a0city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Centennial students&#8217; work is\u00a0also\u00a0published in the\u00a0award-winning\u00a0Toronto Observer, the college&#8217;s student-led\u00a0journalism media outlet. Come September,\u00a0the publication\u00a0will\u00a0operate\u00a0from a newly\u00a0constructed\u00a0multimedia newsroom at Centennial&#8217;s Progress\u00a0Campus in Scarborough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0QUOTES\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This partnership between Toronto Foundation and the School of Media and Creative Arts demonstrates the importance of\u00a0encouraging\u00a0student\u00a0journalists to uncover and tell the hyperlocal stories of real people doing good for their communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Damian Goulbourne, Dean, Faculty of Global Business and Creative Industries, Centennial College<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Strong communities are built not only by the people doing the work, but by the stories that help us see one another.\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0why\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0proud to partner with Centennial College to support the next generation of journalists.
