But Harrison likely totaled the most by a Revolution player since Steve Ralston (2002-10). Harrison also contributes guile and a scoring threat — he hit the bar, top of the net, and had a goal-bound attempt blocked — which could help the Revolution (9-7-3, 30 points) get through a difficult, road-loaded stretch, continuing Wednesday at D.C. United.

Despite Harrison’s performance and superior possession, though, the Revolution did not “deserve” to win due to a combination of misfortune and inattentiveness.

First, they lost Peyton Miller (possible concussion) after a 35th-minute collision with Richie Laryea, in what had been shaping up as a spirited duel. Laryea played to the end, his right hand and head covered in white bandage. His key plays included a back-post block of a 60th-minute Griffin Yow shot at an open net off a Matt Polster feed.

Then, the Revolution allowed Theo Corbeanu space, and his close-in, 43rd-minute attempt went for an own goal off Will Sands. Allowed tons of room in a game last September, Corbeanu burned the Revolution in a 1-1 tie at Gillette Stadium. They should have known to provide cover for Sands, even double-teaming Corbeanu, as Toronto attempted to do on the wing against Harrison.

The second score soon followed, resulting from a seemingly innocuous situation — a Niklas Dorsch long-range drive in the final seconds of first-half stoppage time. With six minutes of added time winding down, the Revolution needed to either bomb upfield and try to equalize, or wind down the clock, get to the locker room, and regroup.

They did neither. Whether going for it, or stalling it out, there was no good reason for Polster’s pass to Brooklyn Raines, nor good reason for Raines to make himself available, back to goal, near the halfway line. Dorsch took advantage, poking away from Raines, following the play, and converting on an impressive shot.

Had the Revolution remained alert and composed, they could have been in better position in the second half, when Toronto’s defense showed signs of desperation. In a six-minute span, referee Joseph Dickerson issued a red and yellow card, and probably should have given more.

In the 71st minute, Gil went down after appearing to have been struck in the face by Kuscevic, who could have been cautioned or ejected; Harrison was downed by Dorsch, who probably committed more than the five fouls Dickerson whistled on him; Gil was felled by Zimmerman, who was cautioned; and Gil was chopped from behind by Djordje Mihailovich, who was ejected.

That left plenty of time to break through, and coach Marko Mitrovic added substitutes Diego Fagundez, Marcos Zambrano, and Harris. But the Revolution fell short, losing their second successive match for the first time since the first two games of the season.

“I felt that the whole game, we had full control and I think we played some very good soccer,” Mitrovic said. “There were two moments where I would say, in the last couple of games, certain things go against us. We just have to work hard to keep pushing, to turn luck back on our side. This is a marathon and we have to get to the end line in the best [form] possible. I really think the team is performing very good and finding its identity. We just have to push luck on our side, because in certain moments, we are missing a little bit to get better results.”

Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.
