{"id":17102,"date":"2026-04-23T22:34:23","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T22:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/17102\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T22:34:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T22:34:23","slug":"carney-disappointed-in-canadas-ambassador-in-washington-for-english-only-invite-to-mps-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/17102\/","title":{"rendered":"Carney &#8216;disappointed&#8217; in Canada&#8217;s ambassador in Washington for English-only invite to MPs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Prime Minister Mark Carney said he is disappointed that Canada&#8217;s ambassador to the U.S. issued an English-only invitation to MPs for an upcoming reception in Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mark Wiseman was tapped to be Ottawa&#8217;s point man in the U.S. capital late last year and is holding a reception to mark the start of his tenure next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The reception is set to take place while MPs on the foreign affairs committee will be in Washington and an invitation was sent out to the committee members, but it didn&#8217;t include any French.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Asked Thursday about the English-only invitation, Carney said it was &#8220;unacceptable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;I&#8217;m disappointed. I&#8217;m disappointed in him disappointing his office,&#8221; the prime minister said in response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Wiseman is set to appear before the foreign affairs committee later Thursday. We find that unacceptable,&#8221; Brunelle-Duceppe told Radio-Canada in a French interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;If you don&#8217;t know Quebec, if you&#8217;re not interested in Quebec, in the language, the culture and the Quebec nation, how can you be the best person to fight for Quebec in this historical context of difficult negotiations with the American administration?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Beside his stated disappointment in the English-only invitation, Carney defended his man in Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;He&#8217;s the right person for the job because he&#8217;s very good at strategy deals. He&#8217;s got very good contacts, including within this administration and the broader business and governmental community,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Carney also argued that it will ultimately be up to himself and his government to ensure Quebec and Canada&#8217;s interests are defended at the negotiating table.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;[Wiseman] is a diplomat, not a decider.
