{"id":171091,"date":"2026-08-17T16:05:06","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T16:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/171091\/"},"modified":"2026-08-17T16:05:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T16:05:06","slug":"toronto-public-health-investigating-legionnaires-disease-outbreak-near-downtown-core","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/171091\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto Public Health investigating legionnaires&#8217; disease outbreak near downtown core"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">TORONTO \u2014 Public health officials in Toronto say they are investigating another outbreak of legionnaires&#8217; disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They say the outbreak of six confirmed cases spans about a one-kilometre radius of the intersection of Bathurst and Dupont streets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Officials say the cases involve people who live, work in or have visited the area and they developed symptoms between July 2 and July 26.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Toronto Public Health is working to determine if this may be linked to a previous outbreak of five legionnaires&#8217; disease cases at Castleview Wychwood Towers, a long-term care home in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The disease is caused by legionella bacteria that exists in water sources and can also be found in cooling towers, hot tubs, sprinkler systems, humidifiers and decorative fountains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">People can contract the disease by breathing in small droplets of water containing the bacteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Officials say legionnaires&#8217; disease does not spread from person to person and the risk to the public remains low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They say they are conducting on-site inspections and environmental sampling, and implementing precautionary control measures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">No source of infection has yet been confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 17, 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Maan Alhmidi, The Canadian Press<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"TORONTO \u2014 Public health officials in Toronto say they are investigating another outbreak of legionnaires&#8217; disease.
