The initiative, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney&#8217;s government in cooperation with the provinces of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador, earmarks CAN$70 billion (EUR43.6 billion) to significantly expand wind and hydropower generation in eastern Canada.<\/p>\n<p>While the plans remain tentative, they represent a major push to boost electricity production. If realized, the project would generate 14,000 megawatts of power, which Carney said would be sufficient to light, heat, and cool homes in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver combined. It would also support 23,000 jobs and contribute $31 billion (EUR19.3 billion) to Canada&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/app.indexbox.io\/indicators\/symbol\/gdp-current-us-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">GDP<\/a> through the early 2040s. Additionally, the increased clean energy output could substantially reduce the country&#8217;s carbon emissions by lessening reliance on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Canada already derives around 80 per cent of its electricity from non-emitting sources, primarily hydro, along with nuclear, wind, and solar, which contributes to the country having the lowest residential electricity costs among G7 nations. Carney emphasized that through clean economy tax credits, efficient project approvals, cooperation with provinces and territories, and attractive financing, Canada is becoming the best place in the world to build and invest in clean energy.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement includes upgrading the Churchill Falls generating station and developing a new hydro project on Gull Island, both located in Labrador on Canada&#8217;s Atlantic coast. Some of the new power would also be transmitted to Quebec, with utility Hydro-Quebec selling a significant amount of electricity into the northeastern United States. Importing more Canadian hydroelectricity is seen by some as key to decarbonizing the US electric grid and improving energy reliability and cost for American consumers.<\/p>\n<p>However, the initiative could face delays within months. At the signing ceremony on Monday, August 17, in Newfoundland, Quebec Premier Christine Frechette acknowledged that her political opponents, the separatist Parti Quebecois, could tear up the agreement if they win provincial elections in October, an outcome current polls suggest is likely.<\/p>\n<p>Since taking office last year, Carney has faced criticism from environmentally conscious groups who accuse him of betraying climate pledges made by his predecessor Justin Trudeau. A member of Carney&#8217;s cabinet resigned last year over plans to advance a new oil pipeline running from Alberta to the Pacific coast.<\/p>\n<p>Monday&#8217;s announcement was welcomed by the Canadian Climate Institute, which said it demonstrated the level of ambition needed to reach Canada&#8217;s goal of doubling the electricity grid with clean energy. The group&#8217;s president, Rick Smith, commented that enhancing domestic clean energy supply would also improve energy security and affordability during volatile energy price swings.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t1.
