In a post on Truth Social late on Tuesday<\/a>, Trump announced he had \u201cpaused the 50% Tariffs against Canada\u201d for a three-day period.<\/p>\n Trump said the brief pause was to allow the \u201cfinalization of documents\u201d for a deal both countries have reached.<\/p>\n The president\u2019s post didn\u2019t specify any details about the deal but noted that the Keystone XL Pipeline, which runs from Nebraska to Canada\u2019s Alberta province, \u201cmay be awoken from the grave.\u201d<\/p>\n In a statement on X<\/a>, the official handle for the U.S. Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, noted the deal will include \u201ccomprehensive market access for all American goods, economic security commitments, digital trade alignment,\u201d and other provisions to protect U.S. workers.<\/p>\n What Have Canadian Officials Said About The Deal?<\/p>\n In an official statement<\/a>, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sounded more cautious about the state of the deal, saying: \u201cSubstantial progress has been made, although there is important work still to be done.\u201d Echoing Trump, he noted that the U.S. 50% tariffs have been postponed until the end of day on August 21. His statement said the Canadian government in the past few weeks has: \u201cengaged in intensive discussions with the United States to address outstanding trade issues and deliver greater certainty and real benefits for Canadian businesses, workers, farmers and families.\u201d Carney noted that while negotiations with the U.S. continue, his country is also focused on \u201cbuilding a stronger, more independent, and more competitive economy at home.\u201d<\/p>\n What Do We Know About The Tariffs?<\/p>\n Last month, Trump signed an order<\/a> imposing 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, including wine, dairy, cement, furniture, and ice hockey gear. To implement the tariffs, Trump used Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, an obscure Great Depression-era law that allows the president to impose tariffs up to 50% on countries deemed to be discriminating against U.S. goods.
