{"id":173914,"date":"2026-08-19T10:18:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T10:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/173914\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T10:18:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T10:18:09","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-39","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/173914\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global markets were muted on receding prospects of a deal to end the conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures were in positive territory after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/us-politics\/article-trump-pauses-new-tariffs-for-three-days-says-us-canada-have-reached\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/us-politics\/article-trump-pauses-new-tariffs-for-three-days-says-us-canada-have-reached\/\">reached a trade deal<\/a> with Canada and will postpone his latest round of threatened tariffs for three days while the agreement is finalized.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures little changed ahead of the release this afternoon of the latest Federal Reserve meeting minutes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from Analog Devices Inc., TJX Cos. Inc., Lowe\u2019s Cos. Inc., Target Corp. and Estee Lauder Cos. Inc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was down 0.11 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 slid 0.17 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX declined 0.1 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 advanced 0.3 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 3.16 per cent lower, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng climbed 0.09 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices hit a three-week high as \u2060uncertainty \u200bover shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and continuing supply disruptions supported the market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures rose 1 per cent to US$91.93, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were up 1.14 per cent to US$85.91 a barrel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cConfidence in safe passage remains low, with shipping volumes still running well below normal levels. That persistent uncertainty continues to keep a geopolitical risk premium embedded in the oil price,\u201d KCM chief market analyst Tim Waterer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold gained 0.5 per cent to US$4,356.29 an ounce, while U.S. gold futures slipped 0.2 per cent to US$4,410.30.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/international-business\/article-canadian-dollar-strengths-on-prospect-of-new-trade-deal-with-the\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/international-business\/article-canadian-dollar-strengths-on-prospect-of-new-trade-deal-with-the\/\">strengthened<\/a> against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 71.89 US cents to 72.10 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 1.54 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, fell 0.26 per cent to 99.40. The dollar was pegged at $1.3874. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro gained 0.26 per cent to US$1.1608.
