{"id":174080,"date":"2026-08-19T13:26:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T13:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/174080\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T13:26:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T13:26:08","slug":"trump-gives-canada-3-day-reprieve-from-new-tariffs-saying-two-sides-have-a-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/174080\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump gives Canada 3-day reprieve from new tariffs, saying two sides have a deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0OTTAWA \u2014\u00a0Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Donald Trump announced late Tuesday night the U.S. would delay new 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods by three days, although the leaders gave differing accounts as to whether the two sides had an agreement in place.<\/p>\n<p>Less than two hours before the threatened Section 338 tariffs on US$20 billion worth of imports were due to take effect, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/117119761850520698\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> in a social media post that he had paused them \u201cfor a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a DEAL!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If there is a deal, the details are scant. In a presidential proclamation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2026\/08\/temporary-suspension-of-additional-duties-to-offset-canadian-discrimination-against-the-commerce-of-the-united-states-with-respect-to-alcoholic-beverages-dairy-and-motor-vehicles\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> by the White House, the president said \u201csenior executive branch officials\u201d had informed him that \u201cCanada has expressed a commitment to remove the discriminations or unreasonable and unequal impositions\u201d regarding dairy, motor vehicles and provincial bans on U.S. alcohol that had led him to threaten the new duties. But the White House did not provide specifics on why it delayed the levies ordered under the Tariff Act of 1930, also known as the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, beyond saying it was in the public interest. The tariffs are now due to take effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Talking Points<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump said he paused additional 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods until Saturday as both countries finalize a \u201cdeal,\u201d while Prime Minister Mark Carney said talks are ongoing<br \/>\nThe White House proclamation claims the U.S. made gains on dairy, auto and provincial alcohol bans, while Trump hinted that the talks could result in revival of the Keystone XL oil pipeline <\/p>\n<p>Carney, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gc.ca\/en\/news\/statements\/2026\/08\/18\/statement-prime-minister-carney-ongoing-canada-us-trade-negotiations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">issued<\/a> a statement saying only that the U.S. had agreed to delay the tariffs as both sides keep talking, and made no mention of an agreement. \u201cOver the last number of weeks, Canada has engaged in intensive discussions with the United States to address outstanding trade issues and deliver greater certainty and real benefits for Canadian businesses, workers, farmers, and families,\u201d the statement said. \u201cWhile we continue this work, Canada remains focused on building a stronger, more independent, and more competitive economy at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candace Laing, president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the reprieve but urged negotiators to keep going. \u201cLet\u2019s be clear: the tariff delay provides relief on both sides of the border. We commend the negotiating team for their work and sense of urgency this week, and call on them to keep it up: ultimately, a resilient and integrated North American economy would be a stronger one for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his social media post, Trump hinted at a role for the Keystone XL pipeline expansion project previously thwarted by two of his Democratic presidential predecessors, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. \u201cThe great Keystone XL Pipeline, long ago killed by Sleepy Joe Biden, may be awoken from the grave!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Calgary-based South Bow, which <a href=\"https:\/\/thelogic.co\/briefing\/tc-energy-shareholders-approve-oil-pipeline-spinoff\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spun off<\/a> from previous proponent TC Energy, said earlier this year it was looking at an expansion to the pipeline that would use previously built infrastructure that already has Canadian permits.
