{"id":174734,"date":"2026-08-19T22:08:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T22:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/174734\/"},"modified":"2026-08-19T22:08:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T22:08:10","slug":"whiskey-reps-hopeful-amid-u-s-canada-trade-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/174734\/","title":{"rendered":"Whiskey reps hopeful amid U.S., Canada trade talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014\u00a0Just under two hours before steep tariffs on Canadian goods were set to take effect Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced a three-day pause to allow for the finalization of a deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you know, the 50% tariffs across the board were going on against Canada today, and they called yesterday and they gave us the points that we had to have,\u201d Trump said Wednesday. \u201cVery fair deal for both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear what the deal includes.<\/p>\n<p>One of the sticking points for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2026\/07\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-imposes-additional-tariffs-on-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">White House<\/a> has been that all but two Canadian provinces stopped selling American alcohol products last year.<\/p>\n<p>The move was retaliation for President Trump\u2019s tariffs on imports of Canadian products including steel and aluminum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hope that both parties use three days to come to an agreement, and that agreement includes American whiskey&#8217;s ability to access the Canadian market,\u201d said Michael Bilello, president and CEO of the American Whiskey Association. \u201cMore importantly, we hope that the provinces agree and align with the federal government and allow American whiskey to access the shelves. That means getting back on the shelves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. liquor exports to Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/distilledspirits.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Final-DISCUS-2025-American-Spirits-Exports-Report-.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dropped<\/a> 70%, from $203 million from March to December 2024 to $60 million during the same time period in 2025, after Canadian provinces pulled American spirits from shelves, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>According to recent <a href=\"https:\/\/nanos.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2026-3094-CTV-July-Populated-Report-American-Alcohol.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">polling<\/a> done by Nanos for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/article\/three-in-four-canadians-wouldnt-buy-american-booze-if-it-returned-to-store-shelves-nanos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CTV News<\/a>, 74% of Canadians said they are not likely to buy American alcohol products if they are put back on the shelves.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that there&#8217;s a lot of politicians in Canada who have taken, I think, pretty good advantage of the opportunity to fire up their base, so there&#8217;s no doubt a lot of anti-American sentiment up there,\u201d Bilello said. \u201cAt the end of the day, this is about American whiskey. We didn&#8217;t ask to be included or involved in these trade discussions, and we just want to connect with our consumer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cal Bricker, president and CEO of Spirits Canada, told Spectrum News in a statement Wednesday:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remain optimistic that we can get the issues resolved and get back to the free trade environment that existed previously. Our goal is precisely the same as our U.S. colleagues.
