A 16-year-old boy has been charged in Edmonton’s latest homicide.<\/p>\n
The teen has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to the weekend death of a 16-year-old girl, Edmonton police announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Police responded to reports of a shooting near 139 Avenue and 32 Street on Sunday morning. There, they found the girl, who was seriously injured and died upon the arrival of emergency personnel.<\/p>\n
The victim died from a gunshot wound, according to an autopsy completed Wednesday, police said.<\/p>\n
Police said the suspect and victim cannot be named due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.<\/p>\n
“Any loss of life is tragic, but incidents involving young people are particularly heartbreaking,” says Staff Sgt. Rob Bilawey of the EPS Homicide Section said in a Wednesday release. “To the families, friends, and community members affected by this loss, we extend our condolences. While an arrest has been made, this case highlights the devastating consequences of youth violence and the importance of continued efforts by families, schools, community organizations, and law enforcement to support young people and prevent violence before it occurs.”<\/p>\n
Police said the investigation into the homicide continues and anyone with any information about this or any other crime is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.
