{"id":175366,"date":"2026-08-20T09:36:06","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T09:36:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/175366\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T09:36:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T09:36:06","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-40","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/175366\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global markets were muted as concerns over higher oil prices and inflation partly offset support from a recovery in global bonds after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/article-us-treasury-doubles-us-long-bond-buybacks-in-the-face-of-surging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/investing\/article-us-treasury-doubles-us-long-bond-buybacks-in-the-face-of-surging\/\">U.S. Treasury intervention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures were mixed after major North American markets closed modestly higher yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures pointed lower after Canada\u2019s main stock index snapped a three-day losing streak yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from Walmart Inc., Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Deere &amp; Co.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was down 0.13 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 fell 0.21 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX declined 0.52 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 gave back 0.11 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 1.36 per cent higher, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng climbed 0.8 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Oil prices climbed to three-week highs, driven by concerns that the impasse in the Iran war will continue to disrupt supply from the key Middle Eastern producing region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures for October delivery rose 1.83 per cent to US$93.30 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures for September traded at US$86.75 a barrel. The more-active October WTI contract was up 1.85 per cent to US$85.95.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cTensions in the Middle East remain high, leaving room for further supply disruptions,\u201d said UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo. \u201cLower oil exports from the Middle East are once again tightening the oil market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold was down 0.7 per cent to US$4,488.19 an ounce. U.S. gold futures were little changed at US$4,546.30.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 72.38 US cents to 72.62 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 2.25 per cent against the greenback over the past month. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, slid 0.16 per cent to 98.68. The dollar was pegged at $1.3776. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro rose 0.16 per cent to US$1.1697. The British pound gained 0.19 per cent to US$1.3633. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last up at 4.677 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Japan trade deficit<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: Canada\u2019s new housing price index for July. Estimate is a decline of 0.1 per cent from June and down 2.2 per cent year-over-year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: Canada\u2019s industrial product and raw materials price indexes for July. Estimates are month-over-month declines of 0.5 per cent and 2.0 per cent, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. initial jobless claims for week of Aug. 15.
