The City of Mississauga has secured $14.3 million in joint federal and provincial funding to support two infrastructure initiatives focused on zero-emission transit and expanded cycling networks.<\/p>\n
The funding will support upgrades to MiWay bus storage and maintenance facilities, as well as planning work for new cycling infrastructure, the city announced.<\/p>\n
Through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, the federal government is contributing $5.75 million and the province is providing $4.79 million toward transit facility upgrades. The project includes modifications to three bus depots to accommodate battery-electric buses, including the installation of charging infrastructure and enhancements to electrical systems.<\/p>\n
The improvements are part of Mississauga\u2019s broader strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.<\/p>\n
A second allocation under the same program\u2014again split between $5.75 million in federal funding and $4.79 million from the province\u2014will fund planning and preliminary design work for about eight kilometres of new cycling infrastructure. The proposed routes include Aquitaine Avenue, Argentia Road and Millcreek Drive, with a focus on improving connections to GO Transit stations in Meadowvale and Lisgar.<\/p>\n
City officials say the work aligns with Mississauga\u2019s long-term cycling master plan and aims to encourage more residents to choose active transportation options.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis investment demonstrates that our federal and provincial partners recognize the importance of continued investment in Mississauga\u2019s transit and active transportation infrastructure,\u201d said Mayor Carolyn Parrish. \u201cUpgrading our transit facilities to support zero-emissions buses moves us closer to our climate goals. At the same time, new planning for safer cycling routes will make it easier for residents to choose active transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n
