The prime minister made the specific request during a virtual first ministers briefing Wednesday as officials worked to finalize a broader trade agreement with Washington. President Donald Trump agreed to a temporary three-day pause on proposed 50% retaliatory tariffs on Canadian exports, placing the removal of provincial alcohol bans front and centre in negotiations. <\/p>\n

Getting American products back onto store shelves may prove far simpler than convincing Canadian consumers to buy them. <\/p>\n

The survey data suggests Canadian craft breweries, wineries and distillers have picked up lasting market share over the past year, insulating local producers even if store inventories are replenished. <\/p>\n

“Whether Nova Scotians or whether Canadians will actually buy it when it gets back on the shelves, that’s a whole other discussion,” Houston said. <\/p>\n

Premiers urge caution on trade leverage <\/p>\n

While leaders such as Houston and Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson expressed readiness to comply pending a final deal, others remain cautious. <\/p>\n

BC Premier David Eby has previously resisted restocking US booze, framing shelf space as critical bargaining leverage. Quebec officials also stressed that decisions regarding liquor stores will remain strictly under provincial jurisdiction. <\/p>\n

Canadian and US negotiators, led by Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Chief Negotiator Janice Charette, continue drafting legal text in Washington to finalize the agreement. <\/p>\n
