{"id":176822,"date":"2026-08-21T10:04:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T10:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/176822\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T10:04:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T10:04:09","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-41","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/176822\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u200bGlobal stocks edged higher \u200bbut remained on track for a weekly decline as investors assessed lingering stress in global bond markets, while a diplomatic deadlock in the Gulf weighed on oil prices and stoked inflation concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures were in positive territory after major North American markets closed down yesterday<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures followed sentiment higher as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/us-politics\/article-canada-us-trade-negotiations-tariffs-trump-carney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/us-politics\/article-canada-us-trade-negotiations-tariffs-trump-carney\/\">clock ticked down<\/a> on trade talks with the U.S. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe initial [Treasury buy back] move was quite remarkable because it came totally as a surprise, but the big question is is \u200bthis meaningful enough to have a long-lasting impact?,\u201d said Christian Hantel, head of global corporate bonds at Vontobel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe \u200ccould see the market still trying to test if they\u2019re ready to increase from the US$4-billion they have announced before. So, it could be an interesting couple of days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.23 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 climbed 0.1 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX rose 0.36 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 gained 0.12 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 0.3 per cent lower, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng advanced 1.21 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u00a0Oil prices edged lower but were \u200bon track for a second straight \u200cweekly gain after the United States threatened to impose \u201cthe toughest sanctions in history\u201d with no end in sight for disruptions to Middle East oil \u2060flows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent \u200bcrude futures fell 0.8 per cent to US$93.03 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures slid 0.86 per cent to US$86.08.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe U.S. is taking a very firm stance against Iran, with the blockade back in place and threats of tougher sanctions on Iranian \u200coil exports, \u200band that\u2019s why we \u200care seeing oil prices back above $90 a barrel,\u201d said ANZ \u200banalyst Soni Kumari.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold climbed 1.6 per cent to US$4,591.01 an ounce, \u2060hitting its \u200bhighest since May 15 earlier in the session. Prices have climbed 4.2 per cent so far this week. U.S. gold futures rose 1.7 per cent to US$4,648.00.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar strengthened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 72.50 US cents to 72.76 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 2.53 per cent against the greenback over the past month. It traded at $1.3728 per US$1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, dropped 0.32 per cent to 98.58. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro rose 0.27 per cent to US$1.1710. The British pound gained 0.28 per cent to US$1.3668. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last down at 4.688 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Japan\u2019s CPI and manufacturing and services PMI<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Euro zone\u2019s manufacturing and services PMI and consumer confidence<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: Canadian retail sales for June.
