With the Edmonton Marathon working to adjust the final results of the race<\/a>, many runners will be wondering if appealed results will push them into the prestigious Boston Marathon’s qualifying range. But the Boston event organizers say they won’t be making exceptions to their standards.<\/p>\n

“For Boston Marathon qualifying purposes, the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) relies on marathon events and race organizers to uphold the integrity of their official results, certified course, and distance. The BAA cannot accept adjusted results if the distance was over or under 26.2 miles, or adjust results if participants went off course,” the BAA said in a statement. “This has been our longstanding policy.”<\/p>\n

Edmonton Marathon organizers say they are working with relevant parties to determine how the results can be recognized for qualifying times. Earlier this week, organizers admitted this year’s course was about 674.4 metres due to a detour caused by construction that wasn’t compensated for later in the course.<\/p>\n

“Recognizing the results for the Edmonton Marathon participants is a top priority,” said Tim Keogh, race director of the Edmonton Marathon, in a statement. “We are committed to keeping participants informed of any updates.”<\/p>\n

This comes on the heels of Sunday’s marathon, where some runners insisted the course was too long. After initially doubling down and saying the course was measured correctly<\/a>, event organizers admitted they made a mistake after further review. While some may have thought the controversy was overblown, qualifying situations like this are the exact reason many runners were up in arms.<\/p>\n

The BAA said they don’t comment on other events.<\/p>\n

“If a race has USA Track and Field, Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), or foreign equivalent certification that it is 26.2 miles, then it may submit official finisher results to the BAA for Boston Marathon qualification,” the BAA said.<\/p>\n

The Edmonton Marathon was initially confirmed by an AIMS Grade A course measurer. If the length was proper, this would have allowed the event to meet BAA’s standards. The event is now working directly with Athletics Canada to try and amend these issues.<\/p>\n
