It isn’t that the team is suddenly good. It isn’t that Ryan Johnson and the Sedins have already proved they can build a Stanley Cup contender. They haven’t. But after years of trying to patch things together and find another quick fix, the Canucks finally appear willing to admit that the old approach wasn’t working. That matters.

The latest NHL front-office confidence rankings had Vancouver 25th, only one spot better than last year’s 26th-place finish. That’s hardly something to celebrate. But the reaction from Canucks fans tells a somewhat different story. There is at least a feeling that the organization has finally chosen a direction. And sometimes, when you’ve spent several years wandering around in the woods, simply knowing which way you’re going is a pretty good start. [from Luszczyszyn, D. (2026, August 20). NHL front-office confidence rankings: How fans feel about every team in 2026. The Athletic.]

Canucks Fans Finally Have a Reason to Believe in the Rebuild

The biggest change is that Vancouver isn’t trying to convince everyone that it is one or two pieces away anymore. The organization has embraced a rebuild, giving Johnson and the Sedins a chance to actually build something rather than constantly trying to preserve what was already there. Johnson’s hiring, rather than Pierre Dorion‘s, was also a signal that the Canucks wanted a different approach. Whether that approach works remains to be seen, but at least there is now something to evaluate.

Vancouver Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson (Bob Frid-Imagn Images)

That doesn’t mean the rebuild is going to be easy. The young players still have to develop. The draft picks have to turn into NHL players. The trades have to work. The contracts have to make sense. And, eventually, the Canucks have to start winning hockey games. There is also the continuing question of how much freedom the new hockey leadership will actually have under ownership.

But after years of trying to stay competitive while also somehow rebuilding, Vancouver fans may be willing to accept some growing pains if they believe there is a real plan behind them. The Canucks haven’t fixed everything. They have simply stopped pretending everything was already fine.

A Healthy Chytil Could Give Vancouver Some Real Depth

That brings us to Filip Chytil, who might be one of the more interesting pieces of this rebuilding puzzle. The question isn’t really whether Chytil will become a star. Given his injury history, that would be asking a lot. The more useful question is what he could give Vancouver if he can finally stay healthy. Before the injuries interrupted his career, Chytil showed that he could be a productive NHL centre with size, speed and offensive ability. The Canucks haven’t seen much of that player yet because so much of his time in Vancouver has been spent trying to get healthy and find his game again.

Filip Chytil, Vancouver Canucks (Photo by Derek Cain/Getty Images)

That makes the debate about whether Chytil should play centre or wing particularly interesting. Moving him to the wing might seem like the safer choice, but his short experiment there last season came when he was still trying to find his legs after a lengthy absence. I’m not sure we learned much from it.

If Chytil arrives at training camp healthy and gets a full preseason to settle into a position, I’d like to see what he can do down the middle. Vancouver has Elias Pettersson, Marco Rossi and Aatu Räty as its other NHL centre options, and giving Chytil a legitimate chance could provide some badly needed depth. It could also keep Räty from being pushed into a role before he’s ready and give the Canucks more flexibility with Braeden Cootes’ development.

That’s really the beauty of a healthy Chytil. Vancouver doesn’t need him to become a 60-point player to make a difference. If he can simply become a dependable NHL centre who can contribute offensively and handle his responsibilities, that changes the options available to the coaching staff. Suddenly Pettersson and Rossi can be used in roles that make sense, Räty can develop at his own pace, and Cootes doesn’t have to be rushed simply because Vancouver needs another centre. Sometimes a player becomes important not because he is the best player on the roster, but because of what his presence allows everyone else to do.

What’s Next for the Canucks?

The same idea applies to the rebuild itself. The Canucks don’t need every decision Ryan Johnson makes to be perfect. They need to start accumulating good decisions and giving themselves options. That’s what has been missing for a while. A healthy Chytil would give Vancouver another option down the middle. A successful rebuild would give the organization options across the board.

For now, that’s probably enough for Canucks fans to feel a little better about where this is headed. There is still a long way to go, and nobody should confuse a direction with a destination. But after years of trying to find shortcuts, Vancouver finally appears willing to take the longer road. For a fan base that has been waiting for something to believe in, that may be the most important change of all.

Free Newsletter

Get Vancouver Canucks coverage delivered to your inbox

In-depth analysis, breaking news, and insider takes – free.

Subscribe Free →

There is something different about the Vancouver Canucks right now.
