{"id":177953,"date":"2026-08-22T03:56:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T03:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/177953\/"},"modified":"2026-08-22T03:56:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T03:56:08","slug":"huang-henderson-chase-big-finale-at-lpgas-cpkc-womens-open-in-edmonton-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/177953\/","title":{"rendered":"Huang, Henderson chase big finale at LPGA\u2019s CPKC Women\u2019s Open in Edmonton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/MTQWYCYCN5FO5IFKI66JTDFFGY.jpg?auth=24e5cfc7aff1d36434a734b591fa54f0f3bc7d780d47fe4412c288bd7fb4928b&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">Miyu Yamashita of Japan hits her tee shot on the 10th hole during the second round at the LPGA Tour&#8217;s CPKC Women&#8217;s Open golf tournament in Edmonton on Aug. 21.DARRYL DYCK\/The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Anna Huang did more than make the cut at the CPKC Women\u2019s Open for the first time in her career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The 17-year-old from Vancouver was the top Canadian heading into Saturday\u2019s third round of the LPGA tournament in Edmonton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Huang posted a second-round 68 on Friday to get to 7-under par and into a tie for seventh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cGoing into this week, making the cut was my biggest goal,\u201d Huang said. \u201cSo now that I\u2019ve got that down, I\u2019m just going to try to chase up the leaderboard this weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Japanese leader Miyu Yamashita followed up her course-record 62 opener with Friday\u2019s 64 to top the leaderboard at 14 under.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI\u2019m really happy about this result, and with two rounds to go (I) just want to focus on my game and keep playing like this,\u201d Yamashita said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">She held a five-stroke lead on Kiara Romero of the United States, South Korea\u2019s Soo Bin Joo and Japan\u2019s Yuri Yoshida, who were all at 9 under.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Meanwhile, defending champion Brooke Henderson had a lot of work to do, and limited runway to do it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The 28-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ont., seeking a third career win in Canada\u2019s LPGA tournament, also shot 68 on Friday to sit nine strokes off the lead at 5 under.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe\u2019ll see what the damage is after today, but it\u2019s only half over at this point, so I just have to go low myself,\u201d Henderson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Romero was contending in her LPGA debut as a pro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI feel like this course really fits my eye, so when I\u2019m out there I\u2019m playing pretty aggressively with my iron shots and just trying to make as many birdies as possible,\u201d the 20-year-old said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Joo, 22, and Yoshida, 26, both sought their first LPGA Tour wins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI was a little bit nervous before starting this tournament because I couldn\u2019t make the cut six tournaments in a row, first time in my career,\u201d Yoshida said. \u201cI\u2019m happy to play on this weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Huang, who became the youngest player to win four European Tour tournaments after claiming the London Championship in early August, missed the cut in Canada in 2024 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Huang was working on a bogey-free round Friday until the 18th when she put her tee shot behind a tree and three-putted for the double.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cEveryone makes mistakes and I think just the last hole is just a bad hole and a bad drive,\u201d Huang said. \u201cI\u2019m just going to move on from that and try to work on my putting today and see how things go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Starting on No. 10, Henderson was 7 under before a pair of back-nine bogeys. Her second-last tee shot drifted left and struck a spectator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Henderson apologized to the woman and gave her a signed golf ball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThrough about 14 holes, I was feeling really nice,\u201d Henderson said. \u201cI was unfortunate to drop a couple shots coming in, but happy to save par on nine. I feel like that was really clutch to kind of save some momentum going into tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI feel like my game is in a pretty good spot. Maybe try to be a bit more aggressive and see if we can climb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Sun and an afternoon breeze Friday hardened the 6,452-yard, par-70 Royal Mayfair Golf Club for later starters. The mosquitoes remained out in full force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI like this golf course. I love Canada. It\u2019s so pretty. All the trees are so pretty and I\u2019m enjoying it, except for the mosquitoes. Gosh, it\u2019s so bad,\u201d Joo said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Henderson proved earlier this summer she\u2019s capable of a late surge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">She within a shot of her third major win with five eagles, including an ace, over her final two rounds at the Amundi Evian Championship in France. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Henderson started the final round there seven shots off the lead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThat was really fun a few weeks ago in France,\u201d Henderson said. \u201cIt gives me some confidence to know that I can come back from behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Calgary\u2019s Aphrodite Deng, who was the Canadian tournament\u2019s low amateur last year in Mississauga, Ont., shot 67 to get to 3 under. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The 16-year-old undid the damage of a triple bogey on her 14th hole by finishing with back-to-back birdies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cI knew that I was playing good the whole day, and it was just that one hole, so it\u2019s not really like skill.
