The Trump administration’s threatened 50% tariffs<\/a> on some popular Canadian goods went into effect Saturday morning after trade talks<\/a> with its northern ally fell apart the night before.<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney later announced a series of dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on imported US goods.<\/p>\n

Those tariffs will apply to industries including dairy, steel, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, Carney said at a press conference in Ottawa.<\/p>\n

“We take this step reluctantly,” Carney said. “We recognize that it will raise costs and reduce choice for Canadians.”<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump<\/a> first announced the new round of tariffs last month to “offset Canadian discrimination.”<\/p>\n

US and Canadian officials had been working on a deal to avoid the tariffs all week. Trump said in a Truth Social post earlier in the week that the deal was close.<\/p>\n

Carney, however, announced in a statement released just before midnight on Friday that he was suspending trade negotiations after he said the United States proposed “last-minute changes” that were “unfair.”<\/p>\n

“We have recognized from the beginning that America has changed, and that we will not return to our old relationship,” Carney wrote.<\/p>\n

The new tariffs are the latest in the ongoing trade dispute<\/a> between Canada and the United States. Trump first ordered new tariffs on Canadian goods in early 2025, to which Canada responded with retaliatory tariffs of its own.<\/p>\n

The latest tariffs, which took effect at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, would apply to a wide range of goods, from beer, wine, and spirits to milk products and hockey equipment.<\/p>\n

Here are the popular Canadian goods that could be affected.<\/p>\n

Canadian whiskies and other alcohol<\/p>\n

The list of affected items like beer, wine, and spirits, including the most popular alcohol Americans consume from north of the border: Canadian whisky.<\/p>\n

Some of the most popular Canadian whisky brands that could be affected by the new tariffs include Crown Royal, Canadian Club, and Black Velvet.<\/p>\n

Crystal Head Vodka, which comes in the signature skull bottle, is also made in Canada and could be affected.<\/p>\n

While Fireball Cinnamon Whisky is a product of the United States, it is made from Canadian whisky, which means it could be indirectly impacted by the tariffs.<\/p>\n

The trade battle over booze between the two allies heated up last year after Trump’s initial tariffs. Most Canadian provinces pulled American-made alcohol<\/a> from their shelves.<\/p>\n

Hockey sticks and gloves<\/p>\n

Hockey equipment, such as sticks and gloves, is on the list of affected products.<\/p>\n

While several popular hockey equipment brands are based in Canada \u2014 including Bauer Hockey, CCM Hockey, and Sherwood \u2014 that does not mean their products will be affected.<\/p>\n

Some Canada-based hockey brands make their products overseas, like in China and Vietnam, and therefore may not be subject to the new tariffs.<\/p>\n

Some wooden hockey sticks from Sherwood are made in Canada, according to the brand, so it’s possible those products could be affected.<\/p>\n

Dairy products<\/p>\n

Various dairy products, such as milk, cream, and powdered dairy, are on the list of affected products.<\/p>\n

Notably, cheese was not on the list. However, in announcing the tariffs, Trump said he was responding in part to Canada’s treatment of US-made cheese.<\/p>\n

Motorcycles, honey, clothing, and much more<\/p>\n

The long list\u00a0of\u00a0products\u00a0affected by the new tariffs also includes motorcycles, honey, clothing, plants, essential oils, dog leashes, construction materials, paper, smartphones, and much more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Your shots of Fireball could soon get pricier.
