EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – A major trade standoff is brewing on our northern border, and it could soon hit Western Wisconsin\u2019s farms and factories right in the pocketbook.<\/p>\n
Trade talks between the U.S. and Canada collapsed late Friday. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney put the brakes on negotiations, accusing the U.S. of pushing for \u201cunfair\u201d and \u201cuneconomic\u201d terms.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn short, they asked too much and offered too little,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n
Beginning this weekend, the U.S. is slapping a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports. But Canada isn\u2019t backing down. Prime Minister Carney announced Canada will retaliate \u201cdollar-for-dollar\u201d starting September 8, targeting key American exports like dairy, agricultural machinery, steel, and electronics.<\/p>\n
Federal trade officials say they are prepared for the friction. \u201cAs President Trump has introduced a trade policy to restore American production and protect American jobs, two countries have retaliated… China and Canada,\u201d said U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. He added that the White House has no plans to resume negotiations.<\/p>\n
What this means for Western Wisconsin<\/p>\n
The fallout could be incredibly painful for our local economy. Canada is Wisconsin\u2019s largest foreign trading partner.<\/p>\n
Extension experts at UW-Madison warn that local dairy farmers\u2014who depend heavily on exporting cheese and butterfat to Canada\u2014face severe export restrictions and plunging commodity prices if Canada shuts the door. Meanwhile, local heavy equipment manufacturers face steep new duties on outbound tractors and harvesters.<\/p>\n
Still, Canadian leaders are projecting confidence. \u201cIt will be painful, but we have a strong, vibrant, diversified economy,\u201d said Ontario Premier Doug Ford, noting Canada is already working to shift its trade partnerships elsewhere.<\/p>\n
Shaking up the race for Governor<\/p>\n
This trade war has instantly ignited the race for Wisconsin Governor, drawing a massive line in the sand between the two candidates.<\/p>\n
Democratic nominee David Crowley took a direct shot at his opponent, Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany, calling the tariffs self-inflicted wounds.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe tariff taxes MAGA extremist Tom Tiffany called \u2018really good things\u2019 and voted for at every opportunity in Congress have only led to higher costs for Wisconsin\u2019s farmers, manufacturers, and working families,\u201d Crowley said in a statement to WEAU. Crowley promised that as governor, he would protect local businesses from \u201cWashington tariffs\u201d by expanding market access.<\/p>\n
Tiffany, who represents Wisconsin\u2019s 7th Congressional District and strongly supports the administration\u2019s trade strategy, has historically defended the tariffs. Tiffany has argued that being tough on trade is the only way to level the playing field for Wisconsin farmers, frequently pointing to Canada\u2019s strict dairy quotas as unfair barriers to local producers.<\/p>\n
Rep. Tiffany\u2019s office has not yet responded to requests for comment. WEAU also requested a comment from other state leaders, including Representative Derrick Van Orden and Senator Tammy Baldwin.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, some local businesses are getting a temporary cushion. A recent federal court filing revealed that U.S. Customs and Border Protection has begun sending out $100 billion in refunds from prior tariff collections to roughly 330,000 American importers.<\/p>\n
