Vermont, New York leaders disapprove of new 50% tariff on Canada<\/p>\n

Multiple leaders from Vermont and Northern New York are coming forward today, to express disappointment in the new 50% tariff on Canada. <\/p>\n

In a social media post<\/a> late Saturday night, Vermont Governor Phil Scott called Canada one of Vermont’s closest ally’s, friends and strategic partners. <\/p>\n

“The Trump tariffs are basically taxes\u2014they raise costs for families, farmers and employers on both sides of the border and strain a relationship that has made both countries stronger and more secure,” Gov. Scott said. <\/p>\n

Vermont’s Relationship with Canada <\/p>\n

It comes after Vermont hosted<\/a> the 47th annual New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers Conference just this month. <\/p>\n

During that meeting, the Quebec Minister of International Relations said that the 45% tariff on softwood lumber has strained their ability to offer cheaper housing in the U.S. <\/p>\n

What will Canada’s tariffs impact? <\/p>\n

In a press conference<\/a> on Saturday afternoon, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the country plans to match the U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar. <\/p>\n

They plan to implement a 50% tariff, targeting the following sectors: <\/p>\n

Steel DairyAppliancesAgriculture EquipmentElectronicsPaper and PulpWhat do the tariffs mean for Northern New York manufacturers? <\/p>\n

The North Country Chamber of Commerce said in a statement tonight that the tariffs could create complications for Canadian manufacturing operations in the Plattsburgh region. <\/p>\n

“The over-arching fact is that Canada and the U.S. do not have a traditional trade relationship as other countries do but instead have created a highly integrated economic partnership in which we make things together,” said Garry Douglass, the President and CEO of the North Country Chamber of Commerce. <\/p>\n

Canada’s tariffs on the U.S. are set to take effect September 8th. <\/p>\n
