Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> likened his country\u2019s tariff tiff<\/a> with the US to a full-blown \u201cwar\u201d on trade \u2014 with President Trump hitting back Sunday, accusing the northern neighbor of trying to secure \u201cthe benefits of being a State, without being one!!!\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe were attacked. You\u2019re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked,\u201d Carney told reporters on Saturday. \u201cThat\u2019s fine. We\u2019ve got the reserves. We\u2019ve got the resilience. We\u2019ve got the plan. We\u2019ve got the focus. We will respond.\u201d<\/p>\n Carney further panned the Trump administration for trying to pressure Canada into \u201ca bad deal.\u201d<\/p>\n On Saturday, the Trump administration imposed a steep 50% tariff on an array of Canadian goods \u2014 such as beer, cheese, and electronics \u2014 reigniting trade tensions between the two North American countries.<\/p>\n Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has publicly railed against President Trump\u2019s brass-knuckled approach to trade. REUTERS<\/p>\n Those tariffs would cover an estimated $28 billion worth of imports, and come on top of existing tariffs on aluminum, lumber, vehicles, and steel.<\/p>\n Trump, who is no stranger to tariff feuds with Canada and has repeatedly mused about it becoming a 51st state, ripped Ottawa for its longstanding trade practices with the US.<\/p>\n \u201cCanada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!! They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!\u201d Trump declared on Truth Social<\/a> early Sunday.<\/p>\n Carney, who vowed to retaliate, blamed the collapse of trade talks with the US on last-minute demands from Washington and alleged that Trump was attempting to rip Ottawa\u2019s sovereignty away.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a power play. And it becomes a question of sovereignty,\u201d Carney said. \u201cWe\u2019re a proud independent country. We\u2019ve got the right values. We\u2019ll make our decisions about who we want to trade with and how, and including on how we work with the United States and other partners.\u201d<\/p>\n Canada\u2019s prime minister also alleged that Trump was demanding America\u2019s northern neighbor \u201cchange its French language, Quebec culture and Canadian identity as a condition for reversing tariffs.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis is no longer about a trade deal \u2014 it is about a takeover of Canada\u2019s sovereignty and identity,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n At issue was whether language and cultural barriers in Quebec undermined US trade there.<\/p>\n The Canadian PM, who previously served as a central banker, declared that retaliatory tariffs on the US will go into effect on Sept. 8. He said Canada will match the US \u201cdollar for dollar.\u201d<\/p>\n US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer vowed that Washington will respond to any trade retaliation from Canada.<\/p>\n \u201cFor decades, Canada has enjoyed the most favorable access to the U.S. market of any country. And from the beginning of President Trump\u2019s trade program, Canada has continued to enjoy the best treatment in the world,\u201d Greer said in a Friday statement.<\/p>\n President Trump has long worked to reshape America\u2019s trade with Canada. Getty Images<\/p>\n The trade war with Canada could roil Senate races in Michigan and Maine, states that have a lot of trade with America\u2019s northern neighbor. <\/p>\n Trump is using Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to impose those duties on Canada.
