In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: \u201cCanada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!,” alluding to his past ambition of making Canada the 51st US state. He went on to accuse the neighbouring nation of imposing high tariffs on American farmers for years, declaring, \u201cThey have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!”<\/p>\n

On Saturday, the US’s 50 per cent tariffs on Canada came into effect<\/a>, hitting $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. The impact is significant since the new duties are expected to affect about 5 per cent of what Canada ships to the United States each year, covering products ranging from hockey sticks to other goods.<\/p>\n

In response to this, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced retaliatory tariffs<\/a> on the United States after the American tariffs came into effect. While speaking to reporters on Saturday, Carney said that the new Canadian tariffs would target US steel, dairy and electronics industries, among others, and take effect on September 8.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada will match Washington\u2019s new tariffs dollar for dollar to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses,\u201d Carney told reporters. This made Carney one of the few global leaders to retaliate against US tariffs. During the Saturday presser, he pledged to forge new trade and military alliances<\/a>, despite Canada\u2019s dependence on the \u200cUS for nearly 70 per cent of its exports.<\/p>\n

While speaking on the doomed talks, Carney said that the negotiations failed after Trump set conditions that were ultimately unacceptable, even though earlier talks had been positive.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn recent days, the United States proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair and undermined the net benefits for Canada, and called into question the reliability of any deal,\u201d Carney said, adding that these demands included curtailing Canada\u2019s ability to forge new trade deals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot accept what they\u2019ve offered, and we will not give what they\u2019ve asked,” he averred, adding that the US negotiators also made unacceptable \u201cthreats\u201d to the French language and \u201cQuebec culture\u201d, referring to the French-speaking province in eastern Canada.
