OpenMedia brings the Glass Room exhibit and the Reality Check panel discussion to Surrey to discuss how data collection and algorithmic filtering shape what becomes part of the public conversation.<\/p>\n

In today’s climate, where democracy faces serious challenges and misinformation has infiltrated almost all communication platforms, The Glass Room<\/a> serves as a timely and powerful tool. Starting in December of 2025, OpenMedia has been sharing Tactical Tech<\/a>\u2019s Glass Room exhibit with community members in British Columbia (BC), aiming to spark conversation about the impact of misinformation and data mining in Canada and around the world.<\/p>\n

The exhibition explores the hidden aspects of our digital lives: how technology shapes public opinion,\u00a0 how data is collected and used, and how misinformation spreads. It empowers visitors to recognize false or misleading information, and take actionable steps to protect their digital privacy. The Glass Room has already appeared in 71 cities worldwide \u2014 including Berlin, London, San Francisco, New York, and Toronto \u2014 and has now arrived in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.<\/p>\n

The Glass Room: Misinformation Edition in Surrey<\/p>\n

The exhibit was hosted at the Clayton Community Centre in collaboration with the Surrey Libraries – Clayton branch from July 1st to August 23rd, 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The first Reality Check<\/p>\n

A new panel discussion was held in tandem with the Glass Room exhibit at the Surrey Libraries – City Centre branch. On August 18th, 2026, we hosted the\u00a0Reality Check: Misinformation, Manipulation, and the Canadian Public<\/a> where community members joined us in person and online for the\u00a0conversation with three very special panelists:<\/p>\n

\tGuerric Hach\u00e9 – long-time worker in the video game industry, as well as a political organizer, independent writer and designer, and nature photographer<\/p>\n

Aislin Jackson – staff lawyer in BCCLA\u2019s Policy department, working primarily on privacy, digital policy, police accountability, and free expression issues<\/p>\n

Katherine Reilly – digital literacy expert in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University<\/p>\n

The panelists discussed the social, legal and psychological ramifications of misinformation as it spreads through social media and makes its way\u00a0to everyday conversations. They shared examples of misleading information that they have ran accross such as fabricated academic citations generated by AI, fabricated polls that can inject misleading information into political races, and examples that illustrate the concept\u00a0“context collapse” where correct infomation within one context is used in a very different context making the infomation irrelevant and often misleading. The discussion also covered the systemic causes of misinformation;\u00a0how new technologies reshape our relationships and social structures;\u00a0regulation and corporate pushback;\u00a0and much more. What’s Next<\/p>\n

The exhibit will be open to the public during October in North Vancouver and we will host another Reality Check panel discussion.<\/p>\n
