{"id":181809,"date":"2026-08-25T04:04:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T04:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/181809\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T04:04:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T04:04:32","slug":"n-b-ceremony-commemorates-canada-u-s-partnerships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/181809\/","title":{"rendered":"N.B. ceremony commemorates Canada-U.S. partnerships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Representatives from both Canada and the United States gathered on Campobello Island for the unveiling of the International Boundary Survey Plaque. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A ceremony celebrating co-operation between Canada and the United States was held just hours after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/world\/trumps-tariffs\/article\/doug-ford-and-donald-trump-exchange-insults-as-trade-war-heats-up-live-updates-here\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/world\/trumps-tariffs\/article\/doug-ford-and-donald-trump-exchange-insults-as-trade-war-heats-up-live-updates-here\/\">trade deal between both countries fell apart<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The installation of a plaque recognizing the United States\u2013Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalboundarycommission.org\/en\/about.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.internationalboundarycommission.org\/en\/about.php\">International Boundary Survey<\/a>, and the world\u2019s longest international border was unveiled on Saturday in Campobello Island, N.B., at the Mulholland Point Lighthouse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The lighthouse, which sits within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rooseveltcampobello.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.rooseveltcampobello.org\/\">Roosevelt Campobello International Park<\/a>, overlooks Lubec, Maine and the Franklin D. Roosevelt International Bridge &#8212; the easternmost land crossing along the 8,892 kilometre boundary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The plaque\u2019s placement has been in the works for several years, in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csce.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.csce.ca\/\">Canadian Society for Civil Engineering<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asce.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.asce.org\/\">American Society of Civil Engineers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"A plaque recognizing the United States\u2013Canada International Boundary Survey, and the world's longest international border, was unveiled on Aug. 22 at the Mulholland Point Lighthouse on Campobello Island, N.B. (Nick Moore\/CTV News Atlantic) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cEverybody kind of jumped really quick and thought this was the perfect location,\u201d said Benjamin Smith, president-elect for the Maine section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The plaque on Campobello Island is the first of several to be placed along the Canada-U.S. boundary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s quite an achievement and we forget that amongst the politics, if you will,\u201d said Bruce Higgins, a member of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering\u2019s national history committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The timing of the plaque\u2019s installation, during one of the most contentious moments to be recorded in Canada-U.S. relations, was subtly noted a few times during the ceremony, However, it wasn\u2019t made a focus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very fitting time to actually go ahead with this,\u201d said Jon Southern, superintendent of Roosevelt Campobello International Park, which commemorates the Canadian summer home of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think the world needs to hear about the fact that people are continuing to get along. This represents all the values of this park. It represents unity, friendship, and mutual respect which is something we have at the park, with American and Canadian employees working side-by-side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Roosevelt Campobello International Park is the only park in the world jointly administered, staffed, and funded by two countries.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"A lighthouse on Campobello Island, N.B., is pictured.
