OTTAWA, Canada \u2014 Canada announced Tuesday it will match the tariffs the United States imposed on its imports \u201cdollar for dollar, rate for rate.\u201d Effective Sept. 8, Canada will impose tariffs of up to 50% on $27.6 billion in U.S. imports, including steel, dairy products, appliances and farm equipment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the United States of America asked too much and offered too little, we made a choice,\u201d Canada\u2019s Minister of Finance Francois-Philippe Champagne said at a news conference announcing the tariffs. \u201cWe chose Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n
Canada\u2019s retaliatory tariffs are in response to the Trump administration enacting 50% import duties on $28 billion of Canadian goods over the weekend after talks between the countries broke down. President Donald Trump has also threatened new 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel.<\/p>\n
Canada and the United States share one of the world\u2019s largest trading relationships, with deeply integrated supply chains across autos, energy, agriculture and manufacturing, making a prolonged trade fight potentially costly for businesses and workers on both sides of the border.<\/p>\n
Champagne said Tuesday that in addition to tariffs of 15%, 25% or 50% on targeted U.S. goods that directly match the American tariff on the same type of Canadian good, the country will provide $7.5 billion in support for Canadian workers and businesses affected by the trade war.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the past several months, our government has worked intensely and in good faith to reach a mutually beneficial trade agreement with the United States of America,\u201d he said. \u201cUltimately, the terms proposed by the U.S. administration were uneconomic, unfair and ultimately unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Champagne said Canada\u2019s counter-tariffs are intended to protect Canadian industries impacted by U.S. tariffs and allow them to compete against U.S. products in the Canadian market.<\/p>\n
Prior to Canada\u2019s announcement Tuesday, Trump wrote several posts on Truth Social complaining about the United States\u2019 neighbor to the north.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the last 10 years, the United States lost, on average, 60 Billion Dollars a year with Canada. No more!\u201d he wrote in one post.<\/p>\n
\u201cCanada has been \u2018Ripping Off\u2019 the U.S.A. for decades,\u201d he wrote in another, adding: \u201cI deal with many countries, and Canada is easily the most difficult and unreasonable. They feel entitled, but they are not a State, and will be entitled no longer!\u201d<\/p>\n
