Uvbiama said. “These new screens deliver useful information to customers where and when they need it.”

New 21- or 29-inch screens were installed on 100 vehicles as part of a pilot project.

The new screens are to be rolled out broadly starting in October across Calgary Transit’s 1,000-plus fixed route bus and shuttle fleets.

This was made possible by modernizing the system’s computer-aided dispatch/automatic vehicle location/advanced passenger information system used to share real-time vehicle tracking and manage bus fleet operations.

It also allows for improved bus tracking accuracy for Calgary Transit’s customer tools.

Meanwhile, features for operators include turn-by-turn navigation, information about incidents, up-to-date construction detours, and live videos in the event of emergencies.

Apart from changes to buses themselves, adjustments are also on the way for where some buses will run.

Changes relating to two transit service reviews go into effect

A Calgary Transit Route 43 bus pulls into a stop on Heritage Drive in the Deerfoot Meadows area of Calgary on March 24, 2024.

After months of engagement and feedback through the North Central and Saddletowne Transit Service reviews, new routes and changes will go into effect next week.

Calgary Transit updates schedules four times a year through input from operators and customers to improve connections and service, said senior leader of service design Jonathan Lea.

“This August 31st, we are implementing two of those larger changes are the Saddletowne Transit Service Review in the northeast and the North Central Transit Service Review in the Harvest Hills-Centre Street North Corridor, and to the east and west of that main spine as well,” he said.

Changes for North Central Calgary aim to improve service levels in the community, align routes with major amenities, and make full use of Max Green infrastructure.

Goals for the Saddletowne area include better connectivity through the community, improved alignment with the rest of the transit network and support the growth of communities like Savanna and Saddle Ridge.

Those two areas have seen significant change since the last big service review, Lea said.

In that time, new communities have developed and they are looking to better connect them with adjacent communities, he added.

Related

Starting this fall, Calgary Transit is also transitioning existing express routes, with several routes in the North Central area running at a reduced level to ease the change.

“It’s a legacy service that is not as efficient or as effective as our two-way, all-day service,” Lea said. “We are phasing those out and that is one point that has been challenging for some of our customers who really like that service. We’re hoping as we transition away from that service to the new network, people will see that there are other options for them to travel.”

Next week’s schedule changes will introduce Route 503 Symons Valley Express between downtown and Sage Hill via Centre Street N.

Other changes coming Aug. 31 include:

Route 4 Huntington: Stop in the 78th Avenue Terminal will be relocated to the Centre St. N.

Route 15 Deerfoot Meadows: Increased morning and midday service, plus service ending slightly later.

Route 65 Market Mall/Downtown West: More frequent service on weekday evenings and weekends.

Route 108 Paskapoo Slopes: Extended from Cresthaven Rise S.W. to Crestbrook Drive S.W., removing the stop on Cresthaven Rise S.W. and adding four new stops to spread service in the community.

Route 145 West Skyview Ranch/Redstone: One stop removed along northbound Redstone Grove N.E., for future needs in the area.

Route 300 BRT Airport: New name and number, becoming Route 500 Airport Express.

School service routes will also be starting ahead of the school year.

A full list of changes can be found on www.calgarytransit.com.

“We continually monitor the service, so we will be updating it every three months as we go along,” Lea said, who also invited further rider feedback at 311 or through the Calgary Transit customer call centre at 403-262-1000.

Catch up with the day’s headlines, curated by our editors and delivered to your email inbox at lunchtime on every business day.
