Rachel Mealey: Canada has retaliated against US tariffs by matching them dollar for dollar, targeting around $28 billion worth of American goods. It follows the collapse of trade talks last week plunging the relationship between the neighbouring countries to new lows. Our Americas editor John Lyons is in Washington. I spoke to him a short time ago.<\/p>\n
John Lyons: Well Rachel, overnight the trade war between the United States and Canada has escalated dramatically. Canada has retaliated against the United States. They have hit more than 700 American products coming into Canada. They haven’t taken a step back. Those tariffs range from 15, 25 and 50% levies and they target a whole range of goods including steel and steel derivatives, aluminium and aluminium derivatives, gym equipment, seafood, appliances, clothing and other things and that is in response to at the weekend when President Trump announced that he was hitting Canada with tariffs and the US has put $20 billion, the same amount exactly Canada has responded with. The Americans hit dairy products coming from Canada, construction, material, cement, alcohol, clothing and furniture and so we are now appear to be moving into a full trade war between two countries that have always been very good friends and allies. So it’s quite strange in America at the moment to see the President saying how warmly he feels towards North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un and yet here now the Canadian Prime Minister said his quote is the Americans asked too much and they offered too little. You’re at war when you get attacked, we got attacked. So to hear that coming from Canada against the Americans is quite stunning. Let’s hear from Canada’s Minister of Finance, Francois-Philippe Champagne.<\/p>\n
Fran\u00c3\u00a7ois-Philippe Champagne: But ultimately the terms proposed by the US administration were uneconomic, unfair and ultimately unacceptable. They asked too much of Canada and offered too little in return.<\/p>\n
Rachel Mealey: That’s Canada’s Minister for Finance there. John, where’s this likely to go from here?<\/p>\n
John Lyons: Well Rachel, we really are again with Donald Trump in uncharted territory. What we know about Donald Trump is his nature is that of a pugilist. He doesn’t mind having fights, he knows how to start them often better than how to finish them. For example the war that he and Israel decided to begin against Iran, he simply cannot extract himself from that. The word quagmire now is being used in the United States more and more. So that’s a war he can’t get out of. He’s now entering a new trade war with one of their closest allies, Canada, and we really don’t know. The interesting thing is the Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, appears to be very strategic, very calm but very determined.<\/p>\n
