{"id":1835,"date":"2026-04-12T22:39:47","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T22:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/1835\/"},"modified":"2026-04-12T22:39:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T22:39:47","slug":"canadian-pm-says-smaller-nations-must-band-together-to-stop-larger-countries-overpowering-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/1835\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian PM says smaller nations must &#8216;band together&#8217; to stop larger countries overpowering them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Middle powers \u2014 like Canada \u2014 are not powerless and need to build a new world order based on new alliances and shared interests, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has told the World Economic Forum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a powerful speech \u2014 reflected in another given by French President Emmanuel Macron \u2014 Mr Carney sought to move beyond the current crisis engulfing Europe and the United States over Donald Trump&#8217;s claims on Greenland and galvanise smaller countries to band together so as not to be overpowered by larger players.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Middle powers must act together because if you are not at the table, you are on the menu,&#8221; Mr Carney said, as he declared that the old world was over and there was no point just mourning its end or hoping for a continuation of the multilateralism of the postwar period.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is not naive multilateralism,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Nor is it relying on diminished institutions. It is building the coalitions that work, issue by issue, with partners who share enough common ground to act together. We accept what is offered. We compete with each other to be the most accommodating.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is not sovereignty. It is the performance of sovereignty while accepting subordination.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Middle powers like Canada are not powerless. We joined its institutions, praised its principles and benefited from its predictability. We could pursue values-based foreign policies under its protection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false but \u2026 this fiction was useful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This bargain no longer works.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let me be direct: We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The multilateral institutions on which middle powers relied \u2014 the WTO, the UN, the COP \u2014 the architecture of collective problem solving \u2014 are greatly diminished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The result was that many countries are concluding that they must develop greater strategic autonomy,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He listed a range of arrangements that Canada had entered that reflected this new view, including new trade deals and &#8220;in the past few days, we have concluded new strategic partnerships with China and Qatar&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Canada has &#8216;what the world wants&#8217;, Carney says<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In words that have echoes for Australia, Mr Carney said that Canada &#8220;has what the world wants&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are an energy superpower. We hold vast reserves of critical minerals. We have the most educated population in the world. Our pension funds are amongst the world&#8217;s largest and most sophisticated investors.
