Canada targets $20 billion in US goods. Here\u2019s where states could feel the impact<\/p>\n

Canada will impose tariffs of up to 50% on $20 billion worth of American goods starting Sept. 8, in response to recent U.S. tariffs, with impacts expected across multiple states and industries.<\/p>\n

Canada is responding to recent U.S. tariffs by imposing retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on approximately $20 billion worth of American goods beginning Sept. 8.<\/p>\n

The tariffs will affect more than 700 products<\/a>, targeting industries including steel and aluminum, machinery and appliances, electronics, paper, wood, furniture, seafood and dairy.<\/p>\n

State trade fact sheets produced by the Embassy of Canada in Washington, using 2025 U.S. Census Bureau data, show how those industries connect to individual states.<\/p>\n

Ohio<\/a> sends approximately $17.5 billion in goods to Canada annually. Machinery and equipment account for nearly one-third of those exports, while metals are also a major part of the state\u2019s trade. Its leading exports include engines and turbines, motor vehicle parts, plastics, automobiles and steel products.<\/p>\n

California<\/a> exports approximately $17 billion in goods to Canada annually. Machinery and equipment account for 39% of that trade, while agriculture represents 26%. Major exports include computers, telecommunications equipment, fruits and nuts, vegetables, automobiles and plastics.<\/p>\n

Pennsylvania<\/a> exports approximately $13.9 billion in goods to Canada annually. Its leading exports include machinery, electronics, plastics, steel products and paper.<\/p>\n

Wisconsin<\/a> sends approximately $7.5 billion in goods to Canada annually, including machinery, paper, plastics, refrigeration equipment and vehicle parts. <\/p>\n

Georgia<\/a> exports approximately $6.8 billion in goods to Canada annually. Machinery and equipment represent 36% of those exports. Products sent to Canada include plastics, refrigeration equipment, paper, carpets, tractors, aircraft components and automobiles.<\/p>\n

Florida<\/a> exports approximately $5.4 billion in goods to Canada annually. Its leading exports include aircraft components, engines and turbines, fruits and vegetables, plastics, medical instruments and seafood. Canada\u2019s tariff list specifically includes fish and crustaceans, which account for approximately $154 million in annual Florida exports to Canada.<\/p>\n

Maine<\/a> exports approximately $1.3 billion in goods to Canada annually. Fish and crustaceans are the state\u2019s largest export to Canada, followed by natural gas, wood products and paper.<\/p>\n

Those figures represent overall state exports to Canada and do not mean every product within those industries will face a tariff. Canada\u2019s measures apply to specific products identified by customs codes.<\/p>\n

Talking to reporters outside the White House on Tuesday, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said she\u2019s proud that Trump is \u201cwilling to stand up and make the hard decisions.\u201d She also said, \u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that it causes concern amongst our farmers and ranchers, as it is a lot of unknown out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne, Canada\u2019s minister of finance and national revenue, emphasized the country\u2019s stance, saying, \u201cWe stand united in our response. We stand united in our resolve. We stand united in fighting for Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump called Canada \u201cdifficult and unreasonable\u201d and threatened to impose additional tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel beginning Jan. 1. He also said he is giving \u201cserious consideration\u201d to renaming Lake Ontario \u201cLake America.\u201d<\/p>\n

The trade war could have political implications, particularly in states with strong economic ties to Canada, including Maine, Ohio, Michigan, Alaska and Iowa. Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine criticized the U.S. tariffs, calling them \u201ca mistake,\u201d while Democrats are connecting the dispute to voter concerns about prices.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has said it does not expect a significant economic impact and argues the president is fighting for fairer trade.<\/p>\n

Canadian officials, however, have said their retaliation is strategically designed to apply political pressure inside the United States ahead of the midterm elections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Canada targets $20 billion in US goods.
