{"id":183659,"date":"2026-08-26T09:26:06","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T09:26:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/183659\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T09:26:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T09:26:06","slug":"before-the-bell-what-every-canadian-investor-needs-to-know-today-42","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/183659\/","title":{"rendered":"Before the Bell: What every Canadian investor needs to know today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Equities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Global markets were muted as investors awaited another pivotal earnings report from AI heavyweight Nvidia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Wall Street futures were mixed after major North American markets closed higher yesterday on a tech rebound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">TSX futures were little changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Canada, investors are getting results from National Bank of Canada<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">On Wall Street, markets are watching earnings from CrowdStrike Holdings Inc., Salesforce Inc. and HP Inc., in addition to Nvidia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Analysts expect Nvidia to forecast an 82.8-per-cent rise in third-quarter sales to US$104.2-billion. Adjusted gross margin \u2060for the second and third quarters is expected to remain around 75 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cStrong revision to guidance could potentially reinforce expectations surrounding huge AI capital expenditure and potentially whether it has further to run or not. That\u2019s not only likely to benefit Nvidia, but also other chipmakers,\u201d said Fiona Cincotta, a senior \u200cmarkets analyst at \u200bCity Index.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Overseas, the pan-European STOXX 600 was up 0.06 per cent in morning trading. Britain\u2019s FTSE 100 edged down 0.08 per cent, Germany\u2019s DAX slid 0.06 per cent and France\u2019s CAC 40 rose 0.44 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In Asia, Japan\u2019s Nikkei closed 0.62 per cent higher, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng rose 0.56 per cent. <\/p>\n<p>Commodities<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u200bOil prices fell to a two-week low as talks between Iran \u200cand Oman revived hopes that the Strait of Hormuz could reopen and remove shipping constraints affecting supply in the key Middle East region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Brent crude futures dropped 2.14 per cent \u2060to US$86.68 a \u200bbarrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were down or 2.3 per cent at US$80.47.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIt\u2019s renewed focus on the discussion between \u200bIran and Oman regarding a deal for transiting \u200coil and other petrochemicals through the Strait of Hormuz. So that sort of creates some optimism,\u201d said Bjarne Schieldrop, chief analyst, commodities, at SEB Research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In other commodities, spot gold fell 0.6 per cent \u2060to US$4,630.72 an \u200bounce. U.S. gold futures dropped 0.2 per cent to US$4,687.20.<\/p>\n<p>Currencies and bonds<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian dollar weakened against its U.S. counterpart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The day range on the loonie was 72.10 US cents to 72.30 US cents in early trading. The Canadian dollar was up about 1.31 per cent against the greenback over the past month. It traded at $1.3866 per US$1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The U.S. dollar index, which weighs the greenback against a group of currencies, inched up 0.04 per cent to 98.95. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The euro slipped 0.01 per cent to US$1.1657. The British pound declined 0.13 per cent to US$1.3631. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In bonds, the yield on the U.S. 10-year note was last up at 4.645 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Economic news<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. real GDP and GDP price index. The consensus projections are annualized rate increases of 1.5 per cent and 6.2 per cent, respectively).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. personal spending and income for July. The Street expects month-over-month gains of 0.1 per cent and 0.2 per cent, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. core PCE price index for July. Consensus is a rise of 0.2 per cent from June and 3.3 per cent year-over-year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">8:30 a.m. ET: U.S. durable and core goods orders for July.
