The Strokes were one of the leading lights of the early 2000s rock revival. The band’s debut, Is This It?, made a bold entrance on the music world’s radar with a collection of some of the tightest, stripped down songs to grace radio waves in years.<\/p>\n

Unlike the more metallic-leaning sounds of Seattle’s grunge scene, the New York City band fronted by lead singer Julian Casablancas married punk pace and energy with a more cutting garage band vibe. Over the years, the group experienced its share of ups and downs, including a lengthy hiatus from recording and touring.<\/p>\n

The band is now back with its seventh full length release, Reality Awaits, and touring in support of the album. Reality Awaits is definitely a more mature effort from the group, with material that dives into the malaise of being a wealthy New Yorker in your mid-forties, ordering Uber Eats and other rock n’ roll essentials.<\/p>\n

With frequent use of auto-tuned vocals and a more clearly pop sensibility, the new material is a far cry from the driving sound that built the group’s reputation. But for many fans who never saw The Strokes back then, they can experience the band in its latest iteration, though without guitarist Nick Valensi.<\/p>\n

He is replaced on tour by Steve Schlitz, a member of Longwave, Hurricane Bells and Blue October. Rhythm guitarist Albert Hammond Jr., bassist Nickolai Fraiture, drummer Fabrizio Moretti and Casablancas round out the crew.<\/p>\n

Reviews for the shows have been largely positive and the single Going Shopping has been a particular hit. Some of that song’s popularity probably includes popular Everyman actor Walton Goggins appearing in the music video, which features some swaggering lip-synching and a parade of offbeat clowns shuffling across the screen.<\/p>\n
