The discovery occurred Aug. 13 in Point Edward, Ontario. Authorities announced the case Aug. 25, nearly two weeks later. The drugs weighed almost 849 pounds.

Canada Border Services Agency officers referred the truck for secondary examination at the port of entry. During that review, officers detected and seized the suspected narcotics. CBSA arrested the driver after the discovery. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police then took over the criminal investigation.

A close-up shows packages of suspected cocaine that CBSA officers seized from a commercial truck at Ontario’s Blue Water Bridge. (Photo: Canada Border Services Agency)

Charges follow secondary examination

The RCMP charged the individual with importing a controlled substance. Investigators also brought a possession-for-trafficking charge. Both counts fall under Canada’s Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The government noted that the court must validate those charges.

Officials did not identify the driver in the joint CBSA and RCMP release. They also did not name a carrier or disclose tractor ownership. The announcement omitted the declared cargo, shipment origin and destination. Authorities also withheld details about the concealment method.

Michael Prosia leads CBSA’s Southern Ontario Region as regional director general. He called the Blue Water Bridge seizure a demonstration of officer expertise. “Every day, they are working with law enforcement partners to secure Canada’s border and prevent harm in our communities.” Superintendent Dale Foote leads Border Integrity for RCMP Federal Policing’s Central Region.

More than 4,500 kilograms seized last fiscal year

CBSA reported more than 4,500 kilograms of cocaine and crack seizures during fiscal 2025-26. That figure includes coca leaves, coca paste and cocaine products. The agency also highlighted a July announcement involving nearly 1.7 tonnes of illegal drugs in Southern Ontario. That case ranked among Ontario’s largest drug busts by weight.

The government release does not identify where the truck began its trip. It also does not establish whether a trucking company faced scrutiny. No court file, carrier records or further operational details appeared with the announcement. FreightWaves reached out for comment before publication.

Why it matters

Commercial freight moves through busy border crossings every day. This seizure shows why border screening remains a critical layer in cross-border supply-chain security.

Click here for more articles on cargo theft and freight fraud by Phil Brink.

Deputies recover $150K in New Balance shoes after BNSF boxcar burglary – FreightWaves

Police recover $258K copper load from stolen J.B.
