Most algae that forms in Brampton\u2019s stormwater ponds is perfectly safe, but the city wants residents to know how to spot potentially toxic blooms that could get people and pets sick.<\/p>\n

There are more than 180 stormwater ponds across the City of Brampton that help reduce flood risks, manage runoff and support local ecosystems, and some of those ponds could see more algae in the summer months due to warmer temperatures.<\/p>\n

Some ponds may take on a green or cloudy appearance due to algae, and ehile the change may be noticeable, the city says most algae growth \u201cis a normal part of the pond ecosystem and is not a cause for concern.\u201d<\/p>\n

But blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, is toxic and can multiply rapidly in warm temperatures and with elevated nutrient levels.<\/p>\n

Not every bloom produces toxins, but some blue-green algae can produce toxins that may be harmful to people, pets and wildlife in rare cases, the city says.<\/p>\n

Laboratory testing is needed to confirm if a bloom is toxic, but the city says a blue-green or turquoise film on the water\u2019s surface is a sign residents can watch for.<\/p>\n

The water will look like spilled paint with thick green water resembling pea soup, the city says. You may also see clumps that resemble fine grass clippings.<\/p>\n

Symptoms of exposure include skin rashes, eye irritation, nausea, vomiting, and fever.<\/p>\n

Anyone who spots a potential blue-green algae bloom should not enter the water, and keep children and pets away from the shoreline, the city says.<\/p>\n

Residents can report a suspected blue-green algae bloom by calling the Ontario Spills Action Centre at 1-866-MOETIPS (663-8477), or Peel Public Health at 905-799-7700.<\/p>\n
