Police have not said whether they believe the alleged attack was targeted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Speaking to reporters outside her home on Thursday afternoon, Ms. Zahid said the car fires have made her concerned for her family\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIt\u2019s a lot for what my family and myself are going through because we have not been able to sleep,\u201d said Ms. Zahid, who was first elected in 2015 and represents the riding of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/WEJC2627NZCFBPOG4HN2II6MZU.JPG?auth=56970c4901783df42f6a9e9063e485682c93abc9044143c765e61eca8e3b51b9&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">In response to Thursday\u2019s incident, Ms. Zahid said she closed her Toronto constituency office for the day as a safety measure.Arlyn McAdorey\/The Globe and Mail<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Melted glass littered the concrete beside the charred cars, one of which belongs to Ms. Zahid. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">There were no injuries resulting from the fires, Toronto Police spokesperson Stephanie Miceli said in an e-mail. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Ms. Zahid said she submitted videos to police from her home security camera and neighbours\u2019 security cameras that showed a person dumping gasoline on \u201cfour or five cars\u201d and lighting two on fire. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In response to Thursday\u2019s incident, Ms. Zahid said she closed her Toronto constituency office for the day as a safety measure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe will wait for the investigation results. But such attacks are unacceptable and will not deter me from my work serving Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East,\u201d she wrote in a statement on social media. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\">Mark Carney<\/a> condemned the suspected arson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThis is a cowardly act of violence and intimidation. It is unacceptable. It is not who we are as Canadians,\u201d Mr. Carney said on social media. <\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Last night, MP Salma Zahid\u2019s car was set on fire outside of her home in Scarborough.<\/p>\n<p>This is a cowardly act of violence and intimidation. The Toronto Police have my full support\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0jLhnyXsqv\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/t.co\/0jLhnyXsqv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mark Carney (@MarkJCarney) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MarkJCarney\/status\/2093015789263585537?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">August 27, 2026<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In an online statement, the National Council of Canadian Muslims said it is \u201cshocked, horrified, and disgusted\u201d by the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWhile she remains resilient and brave as ever, we know many in our community are deeply alarmed given MP Zahid\u2019s years of passionate advocacy for human rights and against all forms of racism,\u201d the group said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In 2018, Ms. Zahid became the first member of Parliament to wear a hijab in the House of Commons. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The MP\u2019s neighbour, Victoria Konstantellos, said she saw the blazes from her window. She woke up her mother, called 911 and raced outside to see the two cars in Ms. Zahid\u2019s driveway engulfed in fire at 1:21 a.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">She banged on her neighbours\u2019 doors and screamed to rouse them from their sleep. Ms. Konstantellos said her biggest fear was the risk of flames spreading from the cars to the homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cIt\u2019s disturbing to know that someone allegedly set this deliberately. But everyone is safe and that\u2019s the most important thing,\u201d the 24-year-old said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">It\u2019s the second time in nearly two years that a vehicle was allegedly set ablaze in front of a home on Ms. Zahid\u2019s street. The 2024 case, which occurred outside an address a few houses away from the MP\u2019s, is still being investigated, police said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Parvinder Singh owns one of the other vehicles allegedly torched that morning. Police didn\u2019t confirm who owned the third vehicle. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He woke up to hearing his name being called and his neighbour saying that his car was burning outside. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Once Mr. Singh quickly left his basement apartment, which is attached to Ms. Zahid\u2019s home, he couldn\u2019t bear to look at the burning car because he had an \u201cemotional connection\u201d to it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cMy head went blank. I thought I was still dreaming,\u201d the 23-year-old said. \u201cIt\u2019s an unimaginable moment.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The level of threats and abuse faced by MPs across all parties has spiked in recent years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Sergeant-at-Arms Patrick McDonell previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-threats-and-harassment-of-mps-have-risen-drastically-in-past-five\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-threats-and-harassment-of-mps-have-risen-drastically-in-past-five\/\">told a House of Commons standing committee<\/a> that the number of security files his office opened related to threatening behaviour directed at MPs climbed from eight in 2019 to 530 in 2023. Threats and harassment against federal politicians also increased by 700 per cent in the same time frame, he said in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Female MPs in particular have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-mps-outline-stream-of-abuse-and-death-threats-against-them-in-house-of\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-mps-outline-stream-of-abuse-and-death-threats-against-them-in-house-of\/\">targeted with abuse and death threats<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In 2022, a man approached and aggressively harassed former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland in rural Alberta, and called her a traitor who should leave the province. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Liberal MP Iqra Khalid said in 2024 that people have spat at her and made threats against her life.
