Donald Trump\u00a0regularly posts images and memes generated by artificial intelligence, but he did not share a picture depicting him dressed as a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer arresting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The supposed post, which spread online as the two countries entered a new stage of their trade war, does not appear in live or archived versions of the US president’s social media.<\/p>\n

“Well Canada. Where do we go from here? Article 5?” asks an August 26, 2026 X post<\/a> sharing the alleged screenshot, which appears to reference NATO’s collective defense\u00a0 principle<\/a>\u00a0(archived here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The attached image purports to show a Trump Truth Social post captioned: “Oh Canada!”<\/p>\n

In the supposed post, Trump is sporting the red uniform of Canada’s national police — sometimes called Mounties — while guiding Carney in handcuffs.<\/p>\n

The visual spread across X<\/a>, Reddit<\/a>, Instagram<\/a> and Facebook, where it was amplified<\/a> by former professional hockey player\u00a0 Theo Fleury<\/a>, whom AFP has repeatedly<\/a> fact-checked for sharing other\u00a0 misinformation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The alleged screenshot also circulated in different languages, such as Chinese<\/a> and Czech<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Canada\u00a0 walked away<\/a> from tariff negotiations with the United States on August 21, launching the two countries into a new stage of their trade war. Carney said in a statement<\/a> that the terms offered by Washington were “unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal” (archived\u00a0 here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Trump has spoken publicly<\/a> and taken to Truth Social to excoriate the US-Canada trade relationship<\/a> — sometimes while making inaccurate claims<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The US president has a reputation<\/a> for sharing altered or AI-generated<\/a> images, including about Canada. Since the trade negotiations broke down, for example, he shared several altered maps<\/a> to promote renaming<\/a> Lake Ontario as “Lake America” (archived here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

He previously\u00a0 shared<\/a> two\u00a0 altered images<\/a> with the caption “Oh Canada!” while floating the idea of Canada becoming the 51st US State (archived\u00a0 here<\/a> and here<\/a>)<\/p>\n

He did not, however, post the caption with an AI-generated image of himself arresting the Canadian prime minister.<\/p>\n

A search of\u00a0 live<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0 archived<\/a> versions of Trump’s Truth Social account yielded no matching results. Factba.se, an interactive database<\/a> tracking the president’s public remarks and social media activity, also does not record any posts with the ” Oh Canada!<\/a>” caption and an image of the Mountie getup (archived\u00a0 here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The Hive Moderation<\/a> AI-detection tool assessed that the image of Trump in the RCMP outfit was likely generated with\u00a0artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

AFP has frequently debunked<\/a> fabricated Truth Social\u00a0 posts<\/a>,\u00a0 which<\/a> have often touched<\/a> on US-Canada relations<\/a> since the start of Trump’s second term.<\/p>\n
