Don’t call her corny. A corn maze in eastern Alberta is paying tribute to country music icon Dolly Parton<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The design for the Maizex Corn Maze near Kitscoty changes each year and this year’s subject, country music queen Parton, was unveiled in March, months before her death on Tuesday. Working with Utah company The Maize, the eight-acre cornfield was carved out to feature a smiling likeness of Parton, along with her acoustic guitar, a pile of books and a butterfly.<\/p>\n

Owner Rhonda Zuk Headon said she was working on a promotional video involving a cardboard Parton stand-up on Tuesday when she received news that the Queen of Country had died.<\/p>\n

“She was a funny, wonderful lady,” Zuk Headon said about Parton. “It’s amazing what a positive person she was and the positive advice she had. We lost a special person.”<\/p>\n

Zuk Headon said the Maizex Corn Maze will donate a portion of its proceeds to the local chapter of Parton’s Imagination Library, the Lloydminster Learning Council. Parton’s Imagination Library, launched in 1995, gifts free books to children in Canada and other areas of the world. It was inspired by Parton’s father, who was unable to read or write. The program has handed over more than 300 million books since its inception.<\/p>\n

The Maizex Corn Maze, which opened for the season earlier this month, is in its third year of operation. Last year’s corn maze design featured country musician Lainey Wilson. In addition to the corn maze, which Zuk Headon said takes participants anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour to complete, they also feature games, animals, food and drinks.<\/p>\n

This weekend is Dolly Days at The Maizex Corn Maze, where visitors will get discounted admission if they come dressed in a Parton-inspired outfit; think glitter, pink and butterflies. Lloydminster Learning Council will be on hand as well, collecting donations for the Imagination Library.<\/p>\n
