Edmonton gains experience with two familiar foes from Donskov\u2019s previous NHL experience with the Vegas Golden Knights and the Dallas Stars.The move could do more than just provide some coaching support. Donskov has NHL<\/a> experience and has coached at the highest level, including Vegas\u2019 2023 Stanley Cup championship run. His experience could give the Oilers a different perspective as they prepare for the 2026-27 NHL season.<\/p>\n

Why did Edmonton Oilers hire Misha Donskov?<\/p>\n

The Edmonton Oilers have hired Misha Donskov as a coaching consultant, adding experienced hockey knowledge to their organization.Donskov has a strong hockey operations and coaching background. He has worked with theVegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars before, so he knows two big Western Conference teams that Edmonton has faced often in pursuit of the Stanley Cup.Donskov has experience in both NHL coaching and hockey operations, so his job is a bit more than a typical coaching gig.He served as the Vegas Golden Knights\u2019 director of hockey operations before being elevated to assistant coach. Donskov was on the Vegas coaching staff during the franchise\u2019s 2023 Stanley Cup championship season.That experience is especially pertinent for the Oilers because Vegas has become one of Edmonton\u2019s biggest rivals in the Western Conference.<\/p>\n

Donskov\u2019s time with the Vegas Golden Knights could provide the Edmonton Oilers with more insight into the workings of a championship-level organization.The timing is interesting, as Edmonton was in the news recently when Vegas blocked former Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy from speaking to the Oilers about a coaching job. The difference with Donskov\u2019s signing is that his previous NHL experience doesn\u2019t give Vegas any say in whether he\u2019s available for Edmonton.His knowledge of the systems at Vegas, his preparation and organizational approach could thus be a helpful internal resource.Donskov spent two seasons with the Dallas Stars in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 NHL seasons.His stint in Dallas adds another level to his resume as the Stars have been a perennial contender in the Western Conference.
