{"id":190371,"date":"2026-09-01T00:45:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T00:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/190371\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T00:45:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T00:45:09","slug":"vigil-in-surrey-b-c-honours-victims-of-deadly-nepal-flooding-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/canada\/190371\/","title":{"rendered":"Vigil in Surrey, B.C., honours victims of deadly Nepal flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Candles, prayer flags and flowers were laid out on Sunday in Surrey, B.C., where scores of people turned out to a vigil for the victims of the deadly flooding in Nepal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">At least 900 people were killed and about 4,700 people are missing in Nepal and China combined following the catastrophic Aug. 26 flash flood that struck Nepal&#8217;s Timure region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Among them are 31 Canadian citizens and permanent residents, including <a data-ylk=\"slk:at least four known to be from British Columbia;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/nepal-flood-missing-metro-vancouver-couples-9.7325518\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">at least four known to be from British Columbia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Over the weekend, federal officials said one Canadian who had been unaccounted for was located safely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hindu Buddhist Foundation of Canada president Amakant Subedi said it was important for the community to come together to pray and support one another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;That is a big humanitarian loss,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Even those people are losing their properties, and we just going to pray for the bodies and [people] who lost their life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sunita Ghimire was among those who came out to light a candle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;We can&#8217;t be there with them, but our heart and our mind, our soul is still there,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">British Columbia&#8217;s Nepali community has been rallying in the wake of the disaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;We are together with them, and at the same time, we are also working together,&#8221;
